To discriminate among the 14 trivalent lanthanide ions, curcumin, a naturally occurring, nontoxic, off-the-shelf, commercially available compound containing a single fluorophore, was chosen as a probe in the water media at pH 6.8 and pH 8.2. By measuring the emission and absorption spectra of the probe, under the different pH conditions, and by performing linear discriminant analysis on the data, 14 Ln ions were discriminated. Additionally, an easy tool for the nonspecialists was developed with easily available household substances, using a smartphone app, which added an extra advantage to this single probe. This probe possesses advantageous features in terms of low-cost and instant on-site detection of the lanthanide ions.

We report the hydrothermal syntheses and structural and spectroscopic characterization of two new uranium oxide hydrate frameworks (UOHFs) with either Pr or Nd ions, Pr(HO)[(UO)UO(OH)] () or Nd(HO)[(UO)UO(OH)] (). Both UOHFs crystallize in the orthorhombic 222 space group and display needle crystal morphologies. Their crystal structures are composed of β-UO-type layers connected by double uranium polyhedra to form the frameworks, with disordered Pr/Nd ions within the framework channels, as revealed by synchrotron single-crystal XRD.

Rare-earth ions (REIs), especially trivalent lanthanides (Ln ), are central to photonic technologies due to sharp intra-4f transitions, long lifetimes, and host-insensitive emission. However, modeling REIs remains challenging due to localized 4f orbitals, strong electron correlation, and multiplet structures. This review summarizes atomistic modeling strategies combining quantum chemistry and machine learning (ML).

The versatility of lanthanide-doped near-infrared (NIR, 700-1,700 nm) luminescent nanoparticles makes them valuable tools in various scientific and technological fields, from bioimaging to information security. However, the luminescence intensity of typical lanthanide-doped nanoparticles is significantly influenced by the efficiency of the sensitizer. The introduction of transition metal ions (such as Cr, Mn and Ni) can greatly enrich the library of lanthanide NIR luminescence nanoparticles.

Image-guided surgery plays a critical role in improving the cancer patient prognosis. However, current clinical probes are often single-modal with "always-on" signals, failing to provide complementary and precise guidance across all perioperative phases. To tackle this hurdle, we develop a biomarker-activatable, multimodal nanoprobe - - based on redox-mediated manganese valence switching for tumor-specific, perioperative image-guided surgery.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent organic pollutant with a global presence in water, air, and soil resources. Herein, a water-stable amine-functionalized lanthanide metal-organic framework () is utilized for ratiometric luminescence detection of PFOA. In the presence of PFOA, there is an increase in the emission intensity of the organic ligand, while the characteristic luminescence intensity of Eu ions decreases, accompanied by a distinct emission color change from red to blue.
