Article Abstract

This paper introduces GRover (the grapevine rover), an adaptable mobile platform for the deployment and testing of proximal imaging sensors in vineyards for the non-destructive assessment of trunk and cordon volume and pruning weight. A SICK LMS-400 light detection and ranging (LiDAR) radar mounted on GRover was capable of producing precise (±3 mm) 3D point clouds of vine rows. Vineyard scans of the grapevine variety Shiraz grown under different management systems at two separate locations have demonstrated that GRover is able to successfully reproduce a variety of vine structures. Correlations of pruning weight and vine wood (trunk and cordon) volume with LiDAR scans have resulted in high coefficients of determination (R² = 0.91 for pruning weight; 0.76 for wood volume). This is the first time that a LiDAR of this type has been extensively tested in vineyards. Its high scanning rate, eye safe laser and ability to distinguish tissue types make it an appealing option for further development to offer breeders, and potentially growers, quantified measurements of traits that otherwise would be difficult to determine.

Streamline Density Normalization: A Robust Approach to Mitigate Bundle Variability in Multi-Site Diffusion MRI.

bioRxiv

Tractometry enables quantitative analysis of tissue microstructure is sensitive to variability introduced during tractography and bundle segmentation. Differences in processing parameters and bundle geometry can lead to inconsistent streamline reconstructions and sampling, ultimately affecting the reproducibility of tractometry analysis. In this study, we introduce Streamline Density Normalization (SDNorm), a supervised two-step method designed to reduce variability in bundle reconstructions.

The troublesome model size and quadratic computational complexity associated with token quantity pose significant deployment challenges for Vision Transformers (ViTs) in practical applications. Despite recent advancements in model pruning and token reduction techniques speed up the inference speed of ViTs, these approaches either adopt a fixed sparsity ratio or overlook the meaningful interplay between architectural optimization and token selection. Consequently, this static and single-dimension compression often leads to pronounced accuracy degradation under aggressive compression rates, as they fail to fully explore redundancies across these two orthogonal dimensions.

Lightweight underwater debris detection model based on improved RT-DETR.

Mar Pollut Bull

August 2025

College of Physics and Information Engineering, Fuzhou University, Fuzhou, 350108, China. Electronic address:

As underwater ecosystems face escalating threats from increasing anthropogenic debris, autonomous monitoring and removal have become critical. Here we present LCSA-DETR, a lightweight object detection model optimized for deployment on resource-constrained autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Built upon RT-DETR, LCSA-DETR introduces four core modifications to improve efficiency and detection performance: (i) replacement of the ResNet-18 backbone with StarNet to reduce computational complexity; (ii) a lightweight cross-stage aggregation encoder (LC-Encoder) with skip connections and feature alignment to enhance parameter efficiency; (iii) an adaptive kernel fusion block (AKFB) for improved multi-scale feature representation; and (iv) a bidirectional feature pyramid network (BiFPN) with dynamic weighting to enable effective feature fusion.

The precise, non-destructive monitoring of fish length and weight is a core technology for advancing intelligent aquaculture. However, this field faces dual challenges: traditional contact-based measurements induce stress and yield loss. In addition, existing computer vision methods are hindered by prediction biases from imbalanced data and the deployment bottleneck of balancing high accuracy with model lightweighting.

Genome-wide lipidomic profiling reveals causal lipid species as targets for inguinal hernia risk.

Mol Genet Genomics

August 2025

Department of General Surgery, First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College, No. 22 Xinling Road, Jinping District, Shantou, 515041, Guangdong, China.

Inguinal hernia (IH) is a common condition with a substantial health burden and emerging evidence suggests that lipid metabolism-related indicators may contribute to its risk. However, the exact role of specific lipid types in causing IH is still unclear. This study aims to investigate whether any of 179 distinct lipid species have a causal impact on IH risk using causal inference.
