The composition of local mammalian carnivore communities has far-reaching effects on terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. To better understand how carnivore communities are structured, we analysed camera trap data for 108 087 trap days across 12 countries spanning five continents. We estimate local probabilities of co-occurrence among 768 species pairs from the order Carnivora and evaluate how shared ecological traits correlate with probabilities of co-occurrence. Within individual study areas, species pairs co-occurred more frequently than expected at random. Co-occurrence probabilities were greatest for species pairs that shared ecological traits including similar body size, temporal activity pattern and diet. However, co-occurrence decreased as compared to other species pairs when the pair included a large-bodied carnivore. Our results suggest that a combination of shared traits and top-down regulation by large carnivores shape local carnivore communities globally.

Toxocara alienata infects racoons and wild pigs in South America and its taxonomy is important to distinguish the species from closely related zoonotic congeners, such as T. canis. This study provides the first genetic characterization of T.

This study addresses the pressing global health burden of mosquito-borne diseases by investigating the application of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for mosquito species identification using wing images. Conventional identification methods are hampered by the need for significant expertise and resources, while CNNs offer a promising alternative. Our research aimed to develop a reliable and applicable classification system that can be used under real-world conditions, with a focus on improving model adaptability to unencountered devices, mitigating dataset biases, and ensuring usability across different users without standardized protocols.

Bacterial infections have become a major challenge to global public health security. In this study, based on the concept of green synthesis, three cerium dioxide (CeO)-calcium oxide (CaO) composites (CS-CeO@CaO, CT-CeO@CaO, and CTD-CeO@CaO) were developed using chemical hydrothermal (CS), chrysanthemum tea impregnation (CT), and residue impregnation (CTD). Eggshell-derived calcium oxide was used as the carrier, in combination with the functional components of chrysanthemum tea and its residue extract.

For many questions in ecology and evolution, the most relevant data to consider are attributes of lineage pairs. Comparative tests for causal relationships among traits like 'diet niche overlap', 'divergence time', and 'strength of reproductive isolation (RI)' - measured for pairwise combinations of related species or populations - have led to several groundbreaking insights, but the correct statistical approach for these analyses has never been clear. Lineage-pair traits are non-independent, but unlike the expected covariance among species' traits, which is captured by a phylogenetic covariance matrix arising from a given model, the expected covariance among lineage-pair traits has not been explicitly formulated.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Prior studies suggest that acute cystitis diagnosis using standard urine culture (SUC) may be suboptimal compared to multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR). mPCR is hypothesized to deliver faster and more accurate results.
Methods: This was a prospective, paired, within-subject study of female patients ≥ 60 years presenting with symptoms of acute cystitis.
