Vanadium slag is a by-product from steelmaking process of vanadium-titanium magnetite, which mainly contains FeO, MnO, VO, and CrO, The elements Fe and Mn are major components of Mn-Zn ferrite. The elements V and Cr are major components of V-Cr alloy. In view of the potential application in these study, a MnZnFeO of high saturation magnetization (Ms = 68.6 emu/g) and low coercivity (Hc = 3.3 Oe) was successfully synthesized from the leaching solutions of vanadium slag by adding appropriate chemical reagents, ZnCl and MnCl·4HO, via roasting at 1300 °C for 1 h. The minor components (CaO and SiO) in the leaching solution of vanadium slag segregated to the grain boundaries resulting in increasing the resistivity of ferrite. The value of DC resistivity of MnZnFeO at 25 °C reached 1230.7Ω m. The residue containing Fe, V and Cr was chlorinated by AlCl and the Fe, V, and Cr ions were released into the NaCl-KCl eutectic. The current-time curve for the electrolysis of molten salt was investigated. Alloy (Fe, V, and Cr) of granular shape was obtained. The residue can be used to produce the mulite. This process provided a new approach to utilize slag from steelmaking.

In order to facilitate low-carbon and green development in the steel industry and the resource utilization of agricultural waste, this study explored the possibility of biomass stalk recycling instead of fossil fuels in coal-based reduction of vanadium-titanium magnetite (VTM). The corn stalk hydrochar (CSH) was selected as the reducing agent and mixed with vanadium-titanium magnetite to fabricate pellets. The evolution behavior of slag in initial pellets was simulated by Factsage7.

Vanadium in basic-oxygen-furnace (BOF) slags is particularly interesting regarding the recovery of this element, which has been further strengthened by its inclusion in the list of critical raw materials by the European Union in 2017. As BOF slags can have a significant vanadium content, they continue to be a promising secondary vanadium source. Therefore, the binding mechanisms of vanadium in the respective slag minerals must be fundamentally understood to adapt a recovery process, which enables a sufficient yield and is environmentally friendly and resource-saving.

The traditional processing methods of vanadium slag have been narrowly focused on the extraction of vanadium, resulting in a significant squandering of resources and environmental pollution of V(V) and Cr(VI). Addressing this, this study investigates the separation and comprehensive utilization of Fe(II), Mn(II), Cr(III), Ti(IV), and V(IV) in vanadium slag. Low temperature sulfate roasting was applied to prepare low valence multiple metals solution from vanadium slag, it avoids the formation of toxic V(V) and Cr(VI) compounds.

We investigated the effects of environmentally relevant sulfate concentrations on the leaching behavior of certain metalloids in hardened cement pastes. In our study, different cement pastes made of Portland cement (CEM I), blast furnace slag cement (CEM III/A) and a sulfate-resistant cement (CEM I SR0) were cured for 28 days and leached with ultrapure water and with sulfate-containing water. The released concentrations of the most metals and metalloids were independent of the presence of environmentally relevant sulfate concentrations below 1 µg/L or even below the limit of quantification (LOQ).
