Article Abstract

A method involving the Diels-Alder (DA) cycloaddition of diacenaphtheno[1,2-b;1',2'-d]thiophenes (DATs) with N-alkylacenaphthylene-5,6-dicarboximides (AIs) was developed to synthesize decacyclene monoimides (DCMIs). The reactions generate the corresponding 1:2 adducts (BAIAs) as major products together with 1:1 adducts (the DCMIs). The molecular structure of BAIAb (N-octyl derivative) was unambiguously assigned as the bis-adduct having an endo, endo spatial disposition of the two acenaphthylene-5,6-dicarboximide moieties by using X-ray crystallographic analysis. Relative to the absorption spectrum of decacyclene triimide (DCTIa, N-2-ethylhexyl derivative), that of the analogous N-2-ethylhexyl-substituted monoadduct, DCMIa, is bathochromically shifted despite the fact that it possesses a less delocalized π-electron system. DCMIa does not fluoresce in various organic solvents, whereas DCTIa emits yellow fluorescence in CH Cl with a low quantum yield (Φ ). Moreover, DCMIa in CDCl displays concentration-dependent H NMR spectroscopy behavior, which suggests that it self-aggregates with an association constant (K ) of (193±50) m at 20 °C. Despite the presence of four bulky tert-butyl groups in DCMIa, its K value for aggregate formation is comparable to that of DCTIa [(495±42) m ], which does not contain tert-butyl substituents. Spectroscopic studies with the bis-adduct BAIAa (N-2-ethylhexyl derivative) show that it displays remarkable solvatofluorochromism corresponding to an emission maximum shift (Δλ ) of 100 nm. The results of density functional theory calculations on BAIAc (N-methyl derivative) demonstrate that a considerable spatial separation exists between the HOMO and LUMO coefficient distributions, which indicates that the ground-to-excited state transition of the novel three-dimensional acceptor-donor-acceptor BAIAa system should have intramolecular charge-transfer character.

To exploit the potential of our newly developed three-dimensional (3D) dimerized acceptors, a series of chlorinated 3D acceptors (namely CH8-3/4/5) were reported by precisely tuning the position of chlorine (Cl) atom. The introduction of Cl atom in central unit affects the molecular conformation. Whereas, by replacing fluorinated terminal groups (CH8-3) with chlorinated terminal groups (CH8-4 and CH8-5), the red-shift absorption and enhanced crystallization are achieved.

Tuning the three-dimensional morphology in the active layer is an effective method to improve the performance of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, an acceptor-donor-acceptor structured small molecule ST10-CN-1 was synthesized and employed as the guest donor to fabricate ternary OSCs based on a PBDB-T:IT-M host binary system. The incorporation of ST10-CN-1 could broaden the active layer's absorption range of solar light thereby leading to a promotional short-circuit current.

A Dislocated Twin-Locking Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor Configuration for Efficient Delayed Fluorescence with Multiple Through-Space Charge Transfer.

Organic materials featuring intramolecular through-space charge transfer (TSCT) excited states are advantageous for efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), although the realization of multiple TSCT systems remains challenging. Herein, a rigid molecule with a three-dimensional dislocated sandwich acceptor-donor-acceptor configuration has been developed by a linking biphenazine (2PXZ) donor and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine (TRZ) acceptor through the twin-locking of two spiro-fluorene bridges. The twin-locking construction with multiple TSCT effects suppresses the intramolecular rotations of various segments in 2PXZ-2TRZ, leading to a small singlet-triplet energy difference, a fast reverse intersystem crossing process, and high photoluminescence quantum yield.

Achieving a high-energy charge-transfer state () and concurrently reduced energy loss is of vital importance in boosting the open-circuit voltage () of organic solar cells (OSCs), but it is difficult to realize. We report herein a novel design tactic to achieve this goal by incorporating a three-dimensional (3D) shape-persistent norbornenyl group into the terminals of acceptor-donor-acceptor-type nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs). Compared with ITIC-based OSCs, norbornenyl-fused 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (CBIC) terminals endow -based OSCs with simultaneously higher and lower radiative and non-radiative voltage loss, hence enhancing by 90 mV.

Smart materials that respond to chemical stimuli with color or luminescence changes are highly desirable for daily-life and high-tech applications. Here, we report a novel porous metal-organic framework (MOF) that shows multiple, selective, and discriminative responsive properties owing to the combination of different functional ingredients [tripyridinium chromogen, Eu(III) luminophore, cationic framework, and special porous structure]. The MOF contains two interpenetrated three-dimensional cationic coordination networks built of a tetrahedral [Eu(μ-OH)] cluster and a tripyridinium-tricarboxylate zwitterionic linker.
