The anisotropically intrinsic scattering and reflection of a sole cell of polymer network-90° twisted nematic liquid crystals (PN-90° TNLCs) without any polarizer are proposed. Light with specifically linear polarizations, incident from one direction, can penetrate the PN-90° TNLCs with applied voltage. The polarization direction of the output beam will be rotated 90°. The same linearly polarized light, incident from the other direction, will be scattered because it encounters the refractive indices mismatch of various LC domains. The reflection, resulting from the boundaries of LCs and polymers, also shows optical anisotropy. Such LC devices can be applied as scattering-type linear polarizers.

This study demonstrates the successful fabrication of nanostructured Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films combining the conjugated copolymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene--3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PDOF--PEDOT) with spherical and triangular silver nanoparticles (AgNP). The LB technique allowed precise control over the molecular arrangement and distribution of the nanoparticles at the air-water interface, resulting in compact, reproducible and structurally ordered nanocomposite films. The structural and morphological properties of the interfacial monolayers and LB films were investigated using surface pressure-area isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) and quartz crystal microbalance.

In ultrasound imaging, propagation of an acoustic wavefront through heterogeneous media causes phase aberrations that degrade the coherence of the reflected wavefront, leading to reduced image resolution and contrast. Adaptive imaging techniques attempt to correct this phase aberration and restore coherence, leading to improved focusing of the image. We propose an autofocusing paradigm for aberration correction in ultrasound imaging by fitting an acoustic velocity field to pressure measurements, via optimization of the common midpoint phase error (CMPE), using a straight-ray wave propagation model for beamforming in diffusely scattering media.

Significance: Tumor tissues exhibit contrast with healthy tissue in circular degree of polarization (DOP) images via higher magnitude circular DOP values and increased helicity-flipping. This phenomenon may enable polarimetric tumor detection and surgical/procedural guidance applications.
Aim: Depolarization metrics have been shown to exhibit differential responses to healthy and cancer tissue, whereby tumor tissues tend to induce less depolarization; however, the understanding of this depolarization-based contrast remains limited.

Anemonefish have a characteristic vertical white barred color pattern on an orange background made by a specific distribution of three types of pigment cells: melanophores, xanthophores, and iridophores. This color pattern is an interesting alternative model to zebrafish to understand the cellular and molecular basis of complex color pattern formation. Using transmission electron microscopic observations, we have investigated the pigment cell composition in the skin of the anemonefish and found that: 1) white skin comprises iridophores and isolated melanophores; 2) orange skin contains xanthophores and scattered melanophores; and 3) black skin encompasses melanophores only.
