The methods to enhance contrast ratios (CRs) in scattering-type transflective liquid crystal displays (ST-TRLCDs) based on polymer-network liquid crystal (PNLC) cells are investigated. Two configurations of ST-TRLCDs are studied and are compared with the common ST-TRLCDs. According to the comparisons, CRs are effectively enhanced by assembling a linear polarizer at the suitable position to achieve better dark states in the transmissive and reflective modes of the reported ST-TRLCDs with the optimized configuration, and its main trade-off is the loss of brightness in the reflective modes.

General theory, which can completely describe the asymmetrical optics in a functional material (FM)-doped 90° twisted nematic liquid crystals (TNLCs), is proposed using Cayley-Hamilton theorem and Jones calculus. The FMs, whose shape and size are similar to those of the adopted NLCs, can be aligned along the long axes of the NLCs. The FMs discussed herein are dichroic dye (DD) and polymer.

The anisotropically intrinsic scattering and reflection of a sole cell of polymer network-90° twisted nematic liquid crystals (PN-90° TNLCs) without any polarizer are proposed. Light with specifically linear polarizations, incident from one direction, can penetrate the PN-90° TNLCs with applied voltage. The polarization direction of the output beam will be rotated 90°.

Carbamazepine (CBZ) has been reported as the most common culprit drug for Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) in several Asian countries including Thailand. A strong association between HLA-B*1502 and CBZ-induced SJS/TEN has been reported in Han Chinese but not in Caucasian and Japanese populations. A case-control study was conducted to determine whether HLA-B*1502 is a valid pharmacogenetic test for SJS/TEN caused by CBZ in a Thai population.

[Pt(tbtrpy)X]Y complexes (tbtrpy = 4,4',4' '-tBu3-2,2';6',2' '-terpyridine) exhibit charge-transfer absorption bands that can be drastically red-shifted to long-wavelength visible absorptions with arylthiolates as X. Further extension to the near-IR (NIR) region is achieved with 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ-) as Y-, resulting in black absorbers with continuous UV-vis-NIR absorptions and opening up potential applications in energy research.

The anticonvulsant carbamazepine (CBZ) frequently causes cutaneous adverse drug reactions (cADRs), including maculopapular eruption (MPE), hypersensitivity syndrome (HSS), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). We reported that SJS/TEN caused by CBZ is strongly associated with the HLA-B*1502 gene in Han Chinese. Here, we extended our genetic study to different types of CBZ-cADRs (91 patients, including 60 patients with SJS/TEN, 13 patients with hypersensitivity syndrome and 18 with maculopapular exanthema versus 144 tolerant controls).

Tracking the distribution of stem cells is crucial to their therapeutic use. However, the usage of current vectors in cellular labeling is restricted by their low internalizing efficiency. Here, we reported a cellular labeling approach with a novel vector composed of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) conjugated with fluorescein isothiocyanate in human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and 3T3-L1 cells, and the mechanism about fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated MSNs (FITC-MSNs) internalization was studied.
