As exposure to coastal hazards increases there is growing interest in nature-based solutions for risk reduction. This study uses high-resolution flood and loss models to quantify the impacts of coastal wetlands in the northeastern USA on (i) regional flood damages by Hurricane Sandy and (ii) local annual flood losses in Barnegat Bay in Ocean County, New Jersey. Using an extensive database of property exposure, the regional study shows that wetlands avoided $625 Million in direct flood damages during Hurricane Sandy. The local study combines these models with a database of synthetic storms in Ocean County and estimates a 16% average reduction in annual flood losses by salt marshes with higher reductions at lower elevations. Together, the studies quantify the risk reduction ecosystem services of marsh wetlands. Measuring these benefits in collaboration with the risk modelling industry is crucial for assessing risk accurately and, where appropriate, aligning conservation and risk reduction goals.

The current guidelines for cardiovascular disease prevention by the European Society of Cardiology highlight the undisputable benefits of exercise and a physically active lifestyle for cardiovascular risk reduction. In addition to the health benefits of physical activity, observational data suggests that regular physical activity lowers all-cause mortality. This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the role of romantic attachment as a protective or risk factor in how individuals cope with infertility diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. A systematic search was conducted across six databases from January 1, 2011, to February 3, 2025. Mechanisms underlying cardiovascular, affective, and metabolic (CAM) multimorbidity are incompletely defined. We assessed how two risk factors-chronic stress (CS) and a Western diet (WD)-interact to influence cardiovascular function, resilience, adaptability, and allostatic load (AL); explore pathway involvement; and examine relationships with behavioral, metabolic, and systemic AL. Male C57Bl/6 mice (8 weeks old, n = 64) consumed a control (CD) or WD (12%-65%-23% or 32%-57%-11% calories from fat-carbohydrate-protein) for 17 weeks, with half subjected to 2 h daily restraint stress over the final 2 weeks (CD + CS and WD + CS).
