Article Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of single-treatment cooled and uncooled microwave ablation in thyroid nodules.

Methods: Eighteen patients (11 women) with an average age of 62 years (range: 41-80) with 18 cold, mainly solid or solid thyroid nodules were treated with cooled or uncooled microwave ablation. Pain during the treatment was measured on a 10-point score. Side effects revealed by ultrasound or patients' complaints were documented. Laboratory data was evaluated before, 24 h and three months after MWA. Nodule volumes were measured before and three months after MWA.

Results: Cooled MWA was better tolerated than uncooled MWA. A significant reduction of thyroid nodule volume was observed in all cases. The reduction after cMWA was higher (40%) than after uMWA (29%). Pain intensity during cMWA was significantly lower than after uMWA. CMWA and uMWA led to a significant decrease of nodule blood circulation and echogenicity and to a significant increase of nodule elasticity. Thyroid function remained intact in all cases. The energy (kJ/s) administered into the nodules in relation to the ablation time during cMWA was higher than during uMWA.

Conclusions: CMWA leads to a slightly higher but statistically not significant nodule volume reduction than uMWA. Patient comfort during cMWA is higher than during uMWA. The risk of unintended side effects is less in cMWA. A Single-treatment provides sufficient results.

Design of hybrid 2D/quantum dot sensor materials for low-cost, uncooled mid-infrared sensing.

Uncooled mid-wave infrared (MWIR) image sensors, which are compact, lightweight, and energy-efficient, are expected to take a dominant position in the future infrared market. As an alternative to traditional epitaxially-grown infrared semiconductors used in high-performance cryo-cooled MWIR imagers, the concept of hybrid sensor materials is gaining attention. Specifically, hybrid structures combining two-dimensional (2D) materials, known for their superior carrier transport properties, with colloidal quantum dots (QDs), which offer excellent optical properties, have shown record-high room-temperature infrared responsivities with spectral responses extending to short-wave infrared (SWIR).

Rhabdomyolyses is a clinical sign of capture myopathy in wild animals and may be linked to glycogen metabolism. To study potential mechanisms, 26 wild blesbok were chased for 15 min and immobilised, whereafter 12 of these blesbok were doused with ice-water (n = 14 chased only group; n = 12 chased + cooled group). An additional 12 blesbok served as resting (not chased) uncooled controls.

Exploiting Spintronics at Room Temperature for Long-Wave Infrared Nanophotonic Digital Bolometers.

Digital detectors that "click" such as avalanche diodes and superconducting nanowire sensors are widely used in visible and near-infrared frequencies within the fields of quantum communications, imaging and metrology. On the other hand, the vast field of infrared bolometry has been dominated by analog detectors barring a few examples which require extremely challenging low temperature environments. Here, we propose and demonstrate a nanophotonic bolometer designed by engineering spintronic materials and dimensions to provide "clicks" from thermally activated transitions between two discrete magnetization states.

Uncooled near- to long-wave-infrared polarization-sensitive photodetectors based on MoSe/PdSe van der Waals heterostructures.

Infrared polarization-sensitive photodetectors have attracted considerable interest for night vision, remote sensing and imaging applications. Traditional bulk infrared photodetectors suffer from integration challenges and high-power consumption induced by the cryogenic cooling requirement. Here, we demonstrate a tunneling-dominant triple-junction broadband polarization-sensitive photodetector based on a van der Waals heterostructure, operating from the near-infrared (NIR) to the long-wave infrared (LWIR) band.

Waveguide-integrated mid-infrared (MIR) photodetectors are pivotal components for the development of molecular spectroscopy applications, leveraging mature photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technologies. Despite various strategies, critical challenges still remain in achieving broadband photoresponse, cooling-free operation, and large-scale complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible manufacturability. To leap beyond these limitations, the bolometric effect - a thermal detection mechanism - is introduced into the waveguide platform.
