Article Abstract

Fermi resonance between the N-H stretching (ν and ν) and the overtone of N-H bending (2ν) in ammonia has hindered the interpretation and assignments of experimental spectra of small ammonia clusters. In this work, we carried out anharmonic vibrational calculations using MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ to examine the vibrational spectra of (NH) with a focus on the size evolution. The enhancement of hydrogen bond strength due to cooperative effects will cause ν and ν to red-shift and blue-shift, respectively, when the size of the cluster increases. Our calculations show that the energy order of fundamental of ν and overtone of ν is reversed between n = 3 and n = 4. Therefore, while the resultant mixed levels do not show remarkable shifts in their peak positions, the main identity of these mixed levels changes and this causes significant re-distribution of their intensities. Furthermore, our ab initio anharmonic calculation scheme can directly evaluate the coupling strength between different N-H stretching and overtone of N-H bending without any experimental parameters, thus leading us to a simpler picture to understand the Fermi resonance in (NH).

Relying on the anharmonic special displacement method, we introduce an ab initio quasistatic polymorphous framework to describe local disorder, anharmonicity, and electron-phonon coupling in superionic conductors. Using cubic Cu_{2}Se, we show that positional polymorphism yields the breakdown of the phonon quasiparticle picture, leading to extremely overdamped anharmonic vibrations while preserving transverse acoustic phonons, consistent with experiments. We also demonstrate highly broadened electronic spectral functions with band gap openings of 1.

Engineering of interface phonons is of vital importance to achieve extremely low thermal conducting candidates, which are crucial for energy conversion devices. Here, we reported an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (0.173 W m-1 K-1) across the all-inorganic halide perovskite CsSnBr3/Cs2SnBr6 interface based on large-scale atomic molecular dynamics simulations.

Mixed quantum-classical methods, such as surface hopping and Ehrenfest dynamics, have proven useful for describing molecular processes involving multiple electronic states. These methods require propagating many independent trajectories, which is computationally demanding. Therefore, we propose the single potential evaluation Ehrenfest dynamics (SPEED), a variation of Ehrenfest dynamics where all trajectories are propagated using a common local quadratic effective potential in the diabatic representation.

Metallic Bond Induces Soft Phonon Mode and Anharmonicity in Heusler Alloy.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

July 2025

Key Laboratory for Anisotropy and Texture of Materials (Ministry of Education), School of Material Science and Engineering, Northeastern University, Shenyang, 110819, China.

The fruitful functional performances of metastable Heusler alloys originate from the martensitic transformation driven by the transverse acoustic soft phonon mode, regulated by anharmonicity. However, the origins of the soft mode and the anharmonicity in these alloys remain unclear. In this work, using ab-initio calculations combined with self-consistent phonon theory (SCPH) and compressed sensing techniques in machine learning, a link among chemical bonding, long-range interaction, soft mode, and anharmonicity is established using NiMnGa as a model system.
