Article Abstract

We have investigated the structural transformation of solid silica spheres into various more complex spherical structures including flower-like, thick or thin nanosheet-shelled and porous shelled spheres. In the absence of organic additives, sodium salts contained in this inorganic reaction system apparently direct the silica dissolution and regrowth of dissolved silicate at the nanometer-scale, leading to the formation of a nanosheet network rather than solid aggregates. Subsequent removal of the salts by simple water washing results in voids in the siloxane network and a significant availability of surface silanol groups so that the resulting nanosheets and spheres composed of them possess large surface areas, pore volumes, and morphological flexibility, which can be varied by an applied stimulus. The results represent a rare example of the transformation of a simple silicate structure into a much more complex spherical structure involving a purely inorganic reaction system.

Rational Design of Purely Inorganic Self-Healing Colloidal Hydrogels To Enable "Green" 3D Printing of Bioglass-Based Bone Substitutes.

3D printing of ceramics or glass typically requires sacrificial organic plasticizers and high-temperature sintering, which is time- and cost-consuming, potentially cytotoxic, and may compromise the bioactivity and functionality of the inorganic components. We herein developed purely inorganic self-healing colloidal gels, consisting of electrostatically attractive silica-based hard nanospheres, to enable 3D printing of highly strong inorganic constructs via additive-free and low temperature sintering (LTS) processing. Through cross-scale analysis of the structural and mechanical features, we quantitatively described the constitutive relationship of attractive colloidal gels based on the integration of colloidal assembly theory with experimental characterizations.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become an invaluable tool for diagnosing and monitoring a range of medical conditions, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, owing, in large part, to its high spatial resolution. Despite this, MRI suffers from an inherent low sensitivity, a drawback that can be mitigated through the use of exogenous contrast agents. Although molecular paramagnetic contrast agents are most commonly used, they suffer from significant limitations, including short circulation times, inadequate sensitivity, moderate (or no) tissue specificity, and potential toxicity.

Chiral systems exhibit unique properties traditionally linked to their asymmetric spatial arrangement. Recently, multiple laser pulses were shown to induce purely electronic chiral states without altering the nuclear configuration. Here, we propose and numerically demonstrate a simpler realization of light-induced electronic chirality that is long-lived and occurs well before the onset of nuclear motion and decoherence.

Form is a common and intuitive criterion to distinguish between the realm of living species and the inanimate nature. However, there are in fact no strict boundaries in terms of morphology, as exemplified by so-called chemical gardens, which form by self-assembly in purely inorganic systems and yet closely mimic the appearance of trees and other plants. While such structures have been reported for a broad range of compositions-most notably silicates of various types of metal cations as well as prominent (bio)minerals like calcium carbonate or phosphate-one important material has been missing in the comprehensive list of these chemobrionic systems: calcium sulfate.

Giant Five-Shell Polyoxometalate Cages and the Single-Cluster-Based Nanowire Superstructures.

The preparation of polyoxometalate molecular cages has always been a long-term and challenging pursuit. In this work, we have successfully prepared two unprecedented giant heterogeneous POM-based purely inorganic molecular cages with symmetry, which contain the aggregation of M (M = Ni, Co)-substituted trilacunary {PW} and Mn-bridged {W}. Sodium ions are used as templates to fill the cages.
