Article Abstract

(75)Se-selenite transfer was investigated in a phytoplankton-mussel-rat food chain model consisting of Scenedesmus obliquus (Turpin) Kützing, Unio mancus Lamark and Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout. (75)Se-metabolized forms were investigated in order to identify potential critical steps in the food chain, as well as its relative bioavailability looking also at intracellular, cellular and organ partitioning. Tissue and intracellular distribution of (75)Se in mussels fed with (75)Se-S. obliquus was different compared to those exposed only to inorganic (75)Se-selenite. The intracellular distribution of (75)Se in the hepatopancreas and mantle of mussels fed (75)Se-microalgae was similar to hepatic and renal distributions in rats, suggesting that their stomach dissociated larger (75)Se-containing molecules. The (75)Se partitioned from water (culture medium) to microalgae showing a bioconcentration factor of 435. The bottleneck in the trophic transfer of (75)Se occurred between S. obliquus-U. mancus. From microalgae to mussels and subsequently to rats no bioaccumulation was verified.

The interaction between nitrogen source and light intensity affects the biomass and phenotypic plasticity of Scenedesmus obliquus.

As critical environmental factors, nitrogen and light not only regulate phytoplankton growth but also influence their phenotypic plasticity. Scenedesmus obliquus, an alga which is famous for its remarkable phenotypic plasticity, was studied to understand its response to varying combinations of nitrogen source and light intensity. It was cultured in media containing different nitrogen sources (NaNO, NHCl, CO(NH)) under a range of light intensities (25, 50, 75, 100, 150 µmol photons m s).

Until the 1950s, large-bodied calanoids and cladocerans dominated the zooplankton community of Lake Victoria, whereas cyclopoid copepods only comprised 10% of microcrustaceans. From the 1960's onwards, cyclopoid copepods increased to 70-90% of zooplankton and cladocerans, now dominated by small species, decreased to ca. 5%.

Synergistic FeS/FeS Dual-Active Sites Enable Sacrificial-Agent-Free Photocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis with Solar-Driven Fertilizer Applications.

Photocatalytic nitrogen reduction to ammonia (NH) under ambient conditions offers a sustainable alternative to the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process but faces significant challenges. Inspired by biological nitrogen fixation, a thiosalicylic acid (TSA)-derived Fe-S cluster catalyst with dual active sites (FeS and FeS) is rationally designed and synthesized. Guided by the hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) theory, the Fe⁺/Fe⁺ ratio in the iron source is optimized to regulate the content of these two coordination structures in the catalysts.

Enhanced wastewater treatment using microalgae-bacteria-fungi consortia with brassinolide.

December 2025

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Jilin University, Changchun 130021, China. Electronic address:

This study assessed microalgae monocultures/consortia with brassinolide (BR) for aquaculture wastewater treatment; co-cultures of Scenedesmus obliquus, Bacillus subtilis, Phanerochaete chrysosporium showed superior pollutants removal efficiencies. In medium-concentration wastewater, on Day 7, 91 % removal efficiency was achieved for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 94 % for total nitrogen (TN), 92 % for total phosphorus (TP), 94 % for Zn, 96 % for Cu, and over 99 % for tetracycline (TC). The three-culture system outperformed the microalgae monoculture control, with the latter reaching only 82 % COD, 85 % TN, 83 % TP, 67 % Zn, 63 % Cu, and 87 % TC removal efficiency under the same conditions.

The aim of the present study is to assess the kinetic growth and yield of microalgae belonging to the species (Kützing, 1833) grown under different macronutrient concentrations (N:P:K), pH and temperature. A three-level three-variable Box-Behnken factorial design was developed to test the influence of environmental factors on the growth parameters applied to a microalgal crop, namely: maximum cell density (N), specific growth rate (µ, d), doubling time (T) and maximum yield (P). A classical logistic growth model was applied to estimate the kinetic behavior of a culture in comparison to other studies in the literature.
