We report the achievement of sensitive gas detection using periodic silver nanoprisms fabricated by a simple and low-cost lithographic technique. The presence of sharp tips combined with the periodic arrangement of the nanoprisms allowed the excitement of isolated and interacting localized surface plasmon resonances. Specific sensing capabilities with respect to aromatic hydrocarbons were achieved when the metal nanoprism arrays were coupled in the near field with functional hybrid films, providing a real-time, label-free, and reversible methodology. Ultra-high-vacuum temperature-programmed desorption measurements demonstrated an interaction energy between the sensitive film and analytes in the range of 55-71 kJ/mol. The far-field optical properties and the detection sensitivity of the sensors, modeled using a finite element method, were correlated to experimental data from gas sensing tests. An absorbance variation of 1.2% could be observed and associated with a theoretical increase in the functional film refractive index of ∼0.001, as a consequence to the interaction with 30 ppm xylene. The possibility of detecting such a small variation in the refractive index suggests the highly promising sensing capabilities of the presented technique.

Determination of the authenticity of a drink as well as the existence or amount of its ethanol content is very important. Herein, silver nanoprisms were successfully used for the discrimination of different water-ethanol mixtures. The nanoparticles were characterized transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis spectrophotometry.

Fast and accurate detection of light in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral range plays a crucial role in modern society, from alleviating speed and capacity bottlenecks in optical communications to enhancing the control and safety of autonomous vehicles through NIR imaging systems. Several technological platforms are currently under investigation to improve NIR photodetection, aiming to surpass the performance of established III-V semiconductor p-i-n (PIN) junction technology. These platforms include-grown inorganic nanocrystals (NCs) and nanowire arrays, as well as hybrid organic-inorganic materials such as graphene-perovskite heterostructures.

Owing to the excellent optoelectronic properties of metal nanoparticle-semiconductor interfaces; hybrid substrates with superior catalytic and sensing properties can be designed. In the present study, we have attempted to evaluate anisotropic silver nanoprisms (SNP) functionalized titanium dioxide (TiO) particles for multifunctional applications such as SERS sensing and photocatalytic decomposition of hazardous organic pollutants. Hierarchical TiO/SNP hybrid arrays have been fabricated via facile and low-cost casting techniques.

Designing efficient, stable, and low-cost bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting is significant but challenging. In this work, Zn and F ions co-doped NiCoP nanoprism arrays grown directly on nickel foam (Zn/F-NiCoP/NF) was synthesized via hydrothermal method followed by phosphorization treatment. The resultant Zn/F-NiCoP/NF exhibits high electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, η = 59 mV) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER, η = 285 mV).
