Two series of Bodipy-containing photochromic spirooxazine and spiropyran derivatives have been designed, synthesized and characterized by (1)H NMR, ESI mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. Their electrochemical and photochromic properties were investigated. The photophysical, ultrafast transient absorption, and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) properties from Bodipy (donor) to the ring-opened merocyanine (acceptor) were also studied. Upon photoexcitation, all the photochromic spirooxazine- and spiropyran-containing compounds exhibited reversible photochromism. Computational studies have been performed to provide further insights into the nature of the electronic transitions for the two classes of compounds. The rate constants and activation parameters for thermal bleaching reactions of compounds SO, SP-alkyne, 1-3, and 8-10 were determined through kinetic studies in acetonitrile. The thermal bleaching reaction rate of the spiropyran-containing compounds is found to be much slower than that of the spirooxazine-containing counterparts.

Helicene-based circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials suffer from severely low color purity in circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Here, a novel molecular engineering strategy is introduced by replacing helicene containing continuous fused benzene rings with a multiple resonance (MR) framework comprising discontinuous fused benzene rings. This approach effectively suppresses high-frequency C─C bond stretching vibrations and enhances short-range charge transfer, enabling high color purity, CPL activity, and efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF).

Fluorescent proteins (FPs) are commonly used as reporters to examine intracellular genetic, molecular, and biochemical status. Flow cytometry is a powerful technique for accurate quantification of single-cell fluorescent levels. Here, we characterize green, red, and blue FPs for use in yeast .

Optical imaging offers high sensitivity and specificity for noninvasive cancer detection, but conventional techniques suffer from limited probe accumulation, tissue autofluorescence, and poor depth resolution. Afterglow luminescence overcomes autofluorescence by emitting persistent light after excitation, yet its utility in vivo remains hindered by weak tumor enrichment and two-dimensional readouts lacking spatial context. Here, we report luminescent-magnetic nanoparticles (LM-NPs) coencapsulating luminescent trianthracene (TA) molecules and iron oxide cores within the amphiphilic polymer pluronic-F127.

Reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process is critical for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials to realize spin-flip of triplet excitons in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), but the RISC processes of most TADF materials are not fast enough, undermining electroluminescence (EL) efficiency stability and operational lifetime. Herein, a symmetry breaking strategy to accelerate RISC processes is proposed. By designing asymmetric electron-withdrawing backbone consisting of benzonitrile and xanthone/thioxanthone groups, two new asymmetric TADF molecules, 4tCzCN-pXT and 4tCzCN-pTXT, with multiple 3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole donors are successfully developed.

The interactions of three berberine mid-chain fatty acid salts ([BBR][C], n = 6, 7, 8) with lysozyme (Lyz) are investigated in detail using multi-spectroscopic and molecular docking techniques. Steady-state fluorescence and UV-visible absorption experiments suggest that the binding mechanism of [BBR][C] on Lyz is a static quenching with a binding ratio of 1:1. The compound [BBR][C] exhibits a moderate binding affinity toward Lyz.
