The present study reports the optimized synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and biological evaluation of a novel, multiwalled carbon nanotube-hyaluronic acid (MWCNT-HA) conjugate, complexed with an anticancer agent, Doxorubicin (DOX) via π-π stacking interaction. The therapeutic conjugate was concomitantly labeled with a near-infrared fluorescent dye, Alexa-Flour-647 (AF-647), and radiotracer Technetium-99m ((99m)Tc) to track its whereabouts both in vitro and in vivo via optical and scintigraphic imaging techniques. Covalent functionalization of MWCNTs with HA facilitated their internalization into human lung adenocarcinoma, A549 cells via hyaluronan receptors (HR) mediated endocytosis. Internalized nanotubes showed lysosomal trafficking, followed by low pH-triggered DOX release under endolysosomal conditions. Consequently, DOX-loaded HA-MWCNTs exhibited 3.2 times higher cytotoxicity and increased apoptotic activity than free DOX in equivalent concentrations. Organ distribution studies in Ehlrich ascites tumor (EAT) bearing mice model indicated that tumor specific localization of (99m)Tc-MWCNT-HA-DOX is significantly higher than both free drug and nontargeted MWCNTs. Pharmacodynamic studies in chemically breast-cancer-induced rats showed that the tumor-growth inhibitory effect of HA-MWCNT-DOX was 5 times higher than free DOX in equivalent concentration. DOX delivered through HA-MWCNTs was devoid of any detectable cardiotoxity, hepatotoxicity, or nephrotoxicity. All these promising attributes make HA-MWCNTs a "smart" platform for tumor-targeted delivery of anticancer agents.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a persistent organic pollutant with toxic effects on human health and ecosystems. In this study, the performance of MWCNT-OH functionalized with iron nanoparticles (MWCNT-OH@Fe) using sugarcane bagasse extract as a reducing agent (green synthesis) was evaluated for BPA adsorption. The kinetics are fast, between 10 and 20 min in the range of concentrations evaluated and the resistance to external film diffusion (external film mass transfer) identified as the rate-limiting step of the process.

Molecular recognition and determination of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and natriuretic peptide C-type (NPPC) are essential for the early prognosis and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, especially in young obese populations. Highly sensitive and selective devices characterized by low Limits of quantification are required for their determination in whole blood. Therefore, a 3D stochastic sensor was developed by immobilizing a chitosan hydrogel onto a carbon paste electrode (used as the support matrix for the hydrogel), which was subsequently modified with gold nanoparticles, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD/AuNPs@MWCNT/CS/CPE).

The spontaneous formation of an ordered array of twisted cobalt(II) porphyrins yields a 2D self-assembled structure that is then wrapped around multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and characterized using different techniques. The structure of β-tetracyano--tetraphenylporphyrinatocobalt(II) (2-Co) shows axial ligation of the metal center with cyano groups when it is adsorbed on the nanotube sidewalls, and the nanotube acts as a template for the formation of the framework layer. The electrocatalytic applications of the formed conjugate are explored in terms of the activity and the selectivity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in basic media.

Flexible sensors integrating motion detection and tactile perception capabilities demonstrate significant potential in aerospace biomechanics and medical rehabilitation. Here, we report a biomimetic inflatable chamber sensor that synergistically integrates pneumatic-auxiliary and electronic sensing for elbow joint health monitoring. The device architecture combines multiwalled carbon nanotube-reinforced silicone composites with embedded electrode arrays integrated within the inner lining of inflatable chambers, achieving high sensitivity while maintaining signal stability under electromagnetic interference.
