Article Abstract

Based on the data from cruises that carried out in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea from April to May, 2009, the temporal and spatial distributions of the particulate organic carbon (POC) were analyzed. And the sources of POC were further discussed according to the chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and C/N. The results showed that the concentration of POC in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea ranged from 24.33 microg/L to 2 817.29 microg/L in spring and the average content was 230.76 microg/L. In horizontal distribution, the highest POC content is in the coastal zones and it tends to decrease toward the far shore on the whole. The highest concentration of POC appears at the northern of Jiangsu Province coastal waters both in surface layer and bottom layer in particular, which is mainly affected by resuspension of sediments. And there is also a second highest concentration in the vicinity of the Yangtze River estuary, indicating the primary influence in the Yangtze River is by diluted water. The concentration of POC in shallow sea area is the highest and distributed uniformly and it is primarily from terrestrial inputs and resuspension. Moreover, the resuspension is relatively stronger than terrestrial inputs. However, the POC concentration in far coast deep water area is under 75 microg/L and it reduces gradually with the increase of water depth, which shows ocean water characteristics. And the POC is mainly from the ocean. The diurnal change of POC concentration in the middle of East Sea shows half-cycle variation, as a whole, the concentration value is high both in the afternoon and midnight, while it is relatively low at dusk, which is mainly under the influence of biological activity at the scene.

As a member of the inflammatory caspases, Caspase-1 can increase the host inflammatory response against pathogen invasion and also function dominantly in apoptosis. In this study, we cloned and obtained two transcripts of Caspase-1 in large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea), namely Lc-Caspase-1_tv1 and Lc-Caspase-1_tv2. The ORF of Lc-Caspase-1_tv1 is 1,239 bp, whereas Lc-Caspase-1_tv2 is 1,167 bp in length, encoding a protein of 412 and 388 aa, and both of which contains a CARD and a CASc domain.

Pufferfish exhibit the smallest vertebrate genomes, making them ideal models for investigating evolutionary patterns and processes that affect genome size. While the Takifugu rubripes genome was fully sequenced two decades ago, key evolutionary drivers remain elusive. We sequenced 10 pufferfish genomes and generated 35 transcriptomes and 13 methylomes to understand genomic evolutionary mechanisms.

Direct mortality due to humans threatens migratory shorebirds.

The decline of migratory shorebirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway has attracted global attention. Conservation efforts thus far have targeted habitat loss and degradation in the Yellow Sea region, with little attention having been given to direct mortality by humans. Here we studied the impacts of direct mortality of shorebirds along China's coast during migration from hunting, fishery bycatch and, at aquaculture sites, bird deterrence measures.

This study investigates the vertical profiles, pollution status and ecological risks of heavy metal(loid)s contamination in three sediment cores (N21, N03, and 38002) from the North Yellow Sea (NYS), with a focus on the influence of grain size effects on sedimentary profiles. The results revealed distinct vertical distribution patterns of heavy metal(loid)s content among the three sediment cores. Enrichment Factor (EF) and Geo-accumulation Index (I) assessments identified Sb as significantly enriched, indicating anthropogenic influence, whereas Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn primarily originated from natural weathering.

Cyantraniliprole is a widely used insecticide in rice that could induce cellular damage. However, the mechanism of cyantraniliprole induced cell apoptosis was not clear.
