Article Abstract

Increasingly, rural preceptorships are sought out for their rich learning opportunities and as an alternative to often over-subscribed urban placements. While rural preceptors view teaching students as a gratifying experience, student evaluation remains an ongoing challenge. Frequently, rural preceptors often lack access to preceptor preparation, faculty support, and other forms of professional development, particularly those learning experiences that are specific to the unique rural setting and nursing culture. In this article, the authors describe Phase Two of a four-phase study which sought to develop and validate, in collaboration with rural nurse preceptors, a framework for conducting student evaluations. Following a grounded theory phase of the study in which the experience of preceptors and students in rural placements were explored, the researchers, project staff, and three rural nurse preceptors met during two working sessions to collate the study results, the nursing education literature, and the preceptors' own experiences to develop a framework for the evaluation process during a rural preceptorship. This framework, using a Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How approach, supported a broader perspective of evaluation of student performance, and provided preceptors with useful strategies for making evaluation an effective component of student learning.

Like many home health organizations, SCAH has faced a persistent registered nurse (RN) shortage, challenging its ability to maintain care delivery standards. In response, executive leadership launched a 12-month Registered Nurse New Graduate Residency Program to recruit and support newly graduated RNs.

Academic-Practice Partnerships (APPs) are formal relationships between academic institutions and healthcare organizations that aim to improve healthcare delivery by preparing practice-ready nurses who readily transition into the workforce. The purpose of this article is to describe the intentional process used to create a new APP between a healthcare organization in a rural setting with a medium sized Midwestern university. The focus of the APP is to enhance leadership experiences for prelicensure students from the academic setting and make the meaningful work and impact of the practice partner nurse leaders visible to students.

Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery Research, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA.

Objectives: Family caregivers (FCGs) may experience numerous psychosocial and practical challenges with interpersonal relationships, mental health, and finances both before and after their care recipient (CR) dies. The specific challenges affecting rural FCGs who often have limited access to palliative care services, transitional care, and other community resources are not well understood. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the challenges rural FCGs experienced immediately before the death of a CR and continuing into the bereavement period.
