Article Abstract

To evaluate the metabolic profile of pregnant and non-pregnant ewes with high or low degree of behavioral lateralization, we used 57 clinically healthy Sardinian ewes. They were divided into three groups: Group A (nonpregnant ewes), Group B (pregnant ewes with one fetus) and Group C (pregnant ewes with twin fetuses). Using behavioral tests, in all groups lateralization was established and ewes were distinguished into ewes with high and low level of lateralization. Every 30 days for 4 months (at 35, 76, 103 and 145 days of gestation), blood samples were collected and total cholesterol, triglycerides, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), glucose, insulin, creatinine, urea, uric acid, total protein, total bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), γ-glutamine transferase (γ-GT), β-hydroxybutyrate (β-OHB), chloride (Cl), potassium (K), sodium (Na) and calcium (Ca) were assessed. The repeated measures multifactor analysis of variance (MANOVA) showed statistical differences of time, pregnancy and degree of lateralization on some studied parameters. These results confirm that pregnancy represents a very important metabolic moment and show the effect of the degree of behavioral lateralization on the assessment of metabolic parameters in non-pregnant and pregnant ewes. Further studies are necessary to value the influence of these factors on other parameters such as hematological parameters and hormones.

The 40Fp8 vaccine strain is safe and protects pregnant ewes from a virulent RVFV challenge.

NPJ Vaccines

August 2025

Centro de Investigación en Sanidad Animal (CISA-INIA-CSIC). Valdeolmos, 28130, Madrid, Spain.

In the present study, we evaluated the immunogenicity, safety and protective efficacy of the attenuated RVFV-40Fp8 strain in natural hosts (non-pregnant ewes) and in a highly susceptible host infection model such as pregnant ewes in the first third of pregnancy. Our results confirm the immunogenicity of 40Fp8 administration in non-pregnant and pregnant ewes, as well as the absence of foetal damage even after a high-dose vaccination regime in pregnant ewes. In addition, the ewes and their foetuses were protected against a virulent RVFV-56/74 strain challenge, as shown by comparative evaluation of blood, serum and different tissue samples from vaccinated and non-vaccinated pregnant ewes.

Hyperketonaemia is a common problem in periparturient sheep. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of FreeStyle Optium Neo H (FS) for measuring blood β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) concentrations in sheep. Whole-blood BHBA concentrations were measured using the FS from the jugular and ear veins of 175 clinically healthy, late-gestation (n = 56) and postparturient (n = 119) ewes.

Cytosine base editor-mediated high-efficiency myostatin editing in Hu sheep.

Funct Integr Genomics

August 2025

Institute of Animal Science, Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Nanjing, 210014, China.

The cytosine base editor (CBE) enables precise C-to-T substitution without inducing DNA double-strand breaks, which offering a promising tool for editing livestock genomes to enhance economically valuable traits. In this study, using Hu sheep, characterized by high reproductive performance but suboptimal meat production as the research subject, two CBE-editing sgRNAs (sgM1 and sgM2) targeting the negative regulator Myostatin (MSTN) gene were designed. The results revealed a 75% editing efficiency of sgM2 at the parthenogenetically activated embryonic level with no detectable off-target effects.

Investigating the variance components pattern and the genetic basis of repeated Fourier transform infrared spectra in sheep milk.

J Dairy Sci

August 2025

Research Unit Genetics and Biotechnology, Agris Sardegna, Loc. Bonassai, 07100 Sassari, Italy.

The variability of milk spectra within and between dairy animals reflects the complex biological processes underlying milk production. Studying this variability may offer insights into an animal's physiological or health status and help elucidate relationships between specific genes and milk's chemical structure. Over 4 yr, biweekly Fourier transform infrared spectra were recorded on 41,075 sheep milk samples collected from 1,256 Sarda ewes at morning and evening milkings.

Purpose: Calliphorid flies commonly cause traumatic myiasis in sheep, which refers to the parasitic infestation by fly larvae in living vertebrate tissues and hence poses a great threat to the well-being of vertebrates. In the present study, surveys were carried out in different regions of the Kashmir Himalaya to document the incidence and prevalence caused by myiasis in sheep.

Methods: Seasonal surveys were conducted at the selected study locations, especially in the areas with a high density of nomadic herding.
