Article Abstract

We demonstrate a nanoscale, subpicosecond (ps) metamaterial device capable of terabit/second all-optical communication in the near-IR. The 600 fs response, 2 orders of magnitude faster than previously reported, is achieved by accessing a previously unused regime of high-injection level, subpicosecond carrier dynamics in the alpha-Si dielectric layer of the metamaterial. Further, we utilize a previously unrecognized, higher-order, shorter-wavelength negative-index resonance in the fishnet structure, thereby extending device functionality (via structural tuning of device dimensions) over 1.0-2.0 microm. The pump energy required to modulate a single bit is only 3 nJ over our current 700 microm(2) area device and can be easily scaled into the picoJoule regime with smaller cross sectional areas.

Electric Field Influences on the Carrier Transport Characteristics of an Individual CsPbBr Microplate.

For optoelectronic devices based on lead-halide perovskites and other semiconductors, a comprehensive understanding of the electric field influences on the carrier transport characteristics is critical to the optimization of their practical performances. To fulfill this challenging goal, here we have employed photoluminescence spatial image and transient absorption microscopy measurements on an individual CsPbBr microplate biased at external voltages in an Au/CsPbBr/Au device. At the subpicosecond time scale, some photogenerated excitons are dissociated into free electrons and holes that drift toward the electrodes to leave behind unfilled defect sites, which are capable of scattering the residual excitons to yield a reduced diffusion coefficient.

This study investigates the effects of laser-induced contamination (LIC) on ultraviolet (UV) laser beam propagation in the sub-picosecond regime. Using a sub-picosecond UV laser source operating at 343 nm with 30 W of mean power at 800 kHz, we examine the influence of prolonged UV exposure on the degradation of beam quality. The experiments are carried out on calcium fluoride () substrates, where contamination deposits are induced by high-power UV radiation under ambient air.

Progress in the fundamental understanding of the chirality-induced spin-selectivity (CISS) effect is hindered by complexity of the systems that have been characterized experimentally. With the goal of emulating CISS in a sufficiently simple molecular system amenable to a high-level treatment, we introduce a small chiral molecule that supports local and charge-transfer excited states. The molecule can also act as a chiral photoswitch.

Research into ultrafast dynamic processes in solids is crucial for understanding the intrinsic properties of matter. In particular, the combination of temporal and spatial resolution provides the most valuable information on such processes. Here, we demonstrate a setup for time-resolved imaging of ferroelectric domain dynamics following excitation by infrared pulses from a free-electron laser.

The detection of alcoholic solutions is crucial for safety and industrial applications. This work investigates the ultrafast heating effects of methanol and ethanol aqueous solutions at varying mass fractions triggered by mid-infrared (MI) pulses, using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the heating effect is negatively correlated with alcohol concentration at frequencies ranging from 0.
