Red oranges are an important component of the so-called Mediterranean diet and they have been used by traditional medicine for their health protective properties, particularly to heal sore throat and cough, suggesting an interesting antiinflammatory activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antiinflammatory activity of a red orange (Citrus sinensis varieties: Moro, Tarocco, Sanguinello) complex (ROC), characterized by high levels of anthocyanins, flavanones, hydroxycinnamic acids and ascorbic acid, on the human keratinocyte line NCTC 2544 exposed to interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and histamine. The expression of immunomodulatory membrane molecules such as inter-cellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) by Western blot analysis, and the release of chemokines such as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) through ELISA kits, were determined. ICAM-1 modulates the permanence and activation of T lymphocytes in the epidermis. MCP-1 is a specific chemoattractant for monocytes and dendritic cells. IL-8 is important for the recruitment of both neutrophils and T lymphocytes. Addition of ROC at different concentrations together with IFN-gamma and histamine induced a dose-dependent inhibition of ICAM-1 expression and MCP-1 and IL-8 release. ROC shows interesting antiinflammatory properties in human keratinocyte cells NCTC 2544. This natural complex could have a topical employment and mitigate the consequences of some skin pathologies.

Following the experience gained during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Belgian Risk Assessment Group (RAG) developed the Respi-Radar in the summer of 2023 to assess the epidemiological situation of respiratory infections and inform public health preparedness and response in Belgium. The Respi-Radar consists of four risk levels (green, yellow, orange and red), which indicate the extent of viral circulation and/or pressure on the healthcare system. Based on these risk levels, authorities can apply adequate measures depending on the epidemiological trends.

Many cnidarian animals possess multiple opsins, including a type known as cnidopsin, which is found throughout the phylum Cnidaria and is divided into several subgroups. Previous studies have suggested that cnidopsins from jellyfish and coral can light-dependently elevate intracellular cAMP levels, likely via activation of Gs-type G protein in cultured cells. Aims: To jointly model longitudinal measures of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and E/A ratio in late-life, and to assess whether predicted trajectory membership is associated with heart failure risk.
Methods And Results: Using a Bayesian non-parametric trajectory approach, trajectories were modelled among 747 Jackson Heart Study participants who underwent ≥2 echocardiograms in 2000-2004 (age 65 ± 5 years), 2011-2013 (75 ± 5), and 2018-2019 (81 ± 5). Using the resulting model, we predicted trajectory membership for 4419 distinct Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study participants based on single time-point measures of LVEF and E/A ratio (age 75 ± 5 years; 'testing cohort').

Conventional Eu-activated phosphors often suffer from severe concentration quenching at high doping levels, significantly limiting their achievable brightness and efficiency. Furthermore, achieving both high color purity and strong emission intensity in the orange-red region remains challenging. In this context, we report the successful synthesis of Eu-activated BaLuBO phosphors via a multistep solid-state reaction under ambient conditions, exhibiting intense reddish-orange emission.
