The crystal structure of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in complex with 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3 revealed the presence of several water molecules near the A-ring linking the ligand C-2 position to the protein surface. Here, we report the crystal structures of the human VDR ligand binding domain bound to selected C-2 alpha substituted analogues, namely, methyl, propyl, propoxy, hydroxypropyl, and hydroxypropoxy. These specific replacements do not modify the structure of the protein or the ligand, but with the exception of the methyl substituent, all analogues affect the presence and/or the location of the above water molecules. The integrity of the channel interactions and specific C-2 alpha analogue directed additional interactions correlate with the binding affinity of the ligands. In contrast, the resulting loss or gain of H-bonds does not reflect the magnitude of HL60 cell differentiation. Our overall findings highlight a rational approach to the design of more potent ligands by building in features revealed in the crystal structures.

Different starch crystal structures significantly influence meat product quality, though their specific impacts on myofibrillar protein (MP) functionality remain unclear despite industry demand for optimized ingredients. This study compared how potato, corn, mung bean, and pea starches affect MP properties in minced pork. Our findings reveal that starch-protein interactions fundamentally regulate MP gel and emulsion properties through the following mechanisms: First, starch promotes protein aggregation by enhancing hydrophobic interactions and disulfide bond formation, affecting gel network crosslinking.

In contrast to metal ions that have been routinely used to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), anions have rarely been used as essential coordination centers in supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs). In this work, we present a SOF, , based on the coordination of chloride anions and a flexible oligopyrrole. Owing to the multiple interactions between individual oligopyrrole molecules and an A-B-C-style stacking of the 2D honeycomb layers, crystalline exhibits reasonable thermal stability and retains its structure upon desolvation.

Bimorph soft actuators, traditionally composed of two materials with distinct responses to external stimuli, often face durability challenges due to structural incompatibility. Here, we propose an alternative design employing free-standing, isostructural heterogeneous Janus (IHJ) films that harmonize stability with high actuation efficiency. These IHJ films were fabricated through a vacuum self-assembly process, consisting of TiCT MXene nanosheets and hybrid graphene oxide (GO)-biomass bacterial cellulose (BC), with a well-matched two-dimensional lattice structure.

Sorafenib, a clinically approved multityrosine kinase inhibitor, exhibits poor aqueous solubility, which limits its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we introduce a solvent-directed self-assembly strategy to modulate the nanostructure of sorafenib without the use of external carriers or complex formulation techniques. In pure water, sorafenib forms large lamellar aggregates, whereas in 30% methanol-water mixtures, it self-assembles into uniform spherical particles approximately 450 nm in diameter.

The evaporation of surfactant-laden sessile droplets has widespread applications in both natural and technological contexts. This study explores the evaporation of droplets containing a nonionic surfactant (tristyrylphenol ethoxylates (EOT)), an anionic surfactant (sodium benzenesulfonate with alkyl chain lengths of C-C (NaDDBS)), and their mixtures at / mole ratios of 0.01, 0.
