First- and second-order multivariate calibration of fluorescence data have been compared as regards the determination of anti-inflammatories and metabolites in the biological fluids serum and urine. The simultaneous resolution of naproxen-salicylic acid mixtures in serum and naproxen-salicylic acid-salicyluric acid mixtures in urine was accomplished and employed for a discussion of the relative advantages of the applied chemometric tools. The analysis of second-order fluorescence excitation-emission matrices was performed using iteratively reweighted generalized rank annihilation method (IRGRAM), parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), and self-weighted alternating trilinear decomposition (SWATLD). The results were compared with first-order fluorescence emission data analyzed with partial least-squares regression (PLS). In all cases, the performance of the methods was improved through the formation of inclusion complexes of the analytes with beta-cyclodextrin. The concentration ranges in which the analytes could be determined were as follows: naproxen, 0-250 ng mL(-1) in serum and 0-200 ng mL(-1) in urine; salicylic acid, 0-500 ng mL(-1) in serum and 0-300 ng mL(-1) in urine, and salicyluric acid, 0-300 ng mL(-1) in urine.

Background: Determination of the estradiol hormone in urine is crucial for evaluating congenital adrenal hyperplasia, certain hormone-producing ovarian tumors, polycystic ovary syndrome, liver disease, pregnancy, and infertility. On the other hand, steroid hormones can have destructive effects on the environment, animals, and the endocrine system of humans. Consequently, accurately measuring this hormone's concentration in trace amounts is essential for environmental safety and human health.

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) re-emerged across Europe in 2024, raising concerns about vertical transmission and neonatal morbidity. We undertook a prospective, single-centre cohort study to characterise the early clinical course of congenitally infected neonates born between April and December 2024. Seventy-one pregnancies with serologically or PCR-confirmed maternal infection were enrolled; seven neonates met laboratory criteria for congenital B19V infection and were followed with serial clinical, biochemical and imaging assessments through the first year of life.

Neuroendocrine compounds discharged into wastewater systems represent an emerging challenge at the intersection of human physiology and environmental microbiology. l-norepinephrine (L-NE), which has been recognized to potentiate growth of human and animal bacterial pathogens, is discharged in sewage through urine and faeces. While extensive pure culture studies have established l-NE's capacity to modulate bacterial virulence through iron acquisition and quorum sensing pathways, its impact on complex microbial communities, where intricate metabolic networks and interspecies interactions dominate, remains largely unexplored.

Ambient ionization mass spectrometry (AIMS) techniques have become an emerging approach over the last years due to their simplicity, permitting high-throughput sample analysis by directly coupling with mass spectrometry while ensuring short analysis times. Among AIMS techniques, coated-blade spray (CBS) has stood out, as it ensures a significant enhancement of overall sensitivity, undoubtedly useful for human biofluid analysis. In parallel, the incorporation of advanced smart materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), into analytical devices is increasing due to their outstanding ability to efficiently trap target analytes, such as industrial chemicals with diverse functionalities and polarities.
