This study aimed to clarify the alterations in gene expression in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) during disease progression and in response to treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors using a syngeneic mouse mRCC model. RENCA cells were orthotopically implanted in BALB/c mice. Mice received first-line treatment with cabozantinib, anti-PD-1 antibody, or a combination.

Objectives: To investigate the prognoses of patients with upper urinary tract carcinoma who had recurrence after radical nephroureterectomy according to the presence or absence of systemic therapy after recurrences. Moreover, to evaluate the reasons for not being treated and to predict these untreated patients using pre-surgical clinical factors.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent radical nephroureterectomy between 2012 and 2022.

Objective: The Japanese guidelines for male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) recommend the water vapor energy therapy (WAVE) procedure only for patients in whom conventional BPH surgery is unsuitable due to advanced age or comorbidities. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the WAVE procedure using the Rezum system in Japan.

Methods: This multicenter retrospective study included patients who underwent the WAVE procedure between August 2022 and December 2023.

Objective: To clarify what urinary condition causes post micturition dribble (PMD) in non-elderly healthy men. We focused on men with PMD who do not have PMD every time they void. We clarified what urinary condition was associated with PMD in individuals to prevent PMD.

Objectives: To evaluate the preoperative risk factors for early intravesical recurrence after radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) in patients with upper urinary tract carcinoma (UTUC) according to the history of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent RNU for UTUC between 2012 and 2022 at 14 hospitals. Early recurrence was defined as intravesical pathologically confirmed recurrence within 1 year after RNU.

Objective: To prospectively assess the impact of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) on detrusor function using pressure flow study (PFS) at 5 years after surgery in a single center prospective non-randomized observational study.

Methods: Sixty consecutive male patients were prospectively enrolled and underwent TURP from November 2014 to November 2018. A questionnaire survey, free uroflowmetry, and PFS were performed at baseline, and 6, 24, and 60 months after surgery.

  • The study aimed to understand how patients feel about the potential loss of erectile function due to prostate cancer treatment.
  • Interviews were conducted with 20 patients scheduled for surgery, revealing that 70% were sad about losing sexual function and 85% wanted to preserve it.
  • Most participants (65%) were open to treatments to restore sexual function but preferred not to spend large amounts of money on such options.

Background: We clarified the predictive factors for changes in the status of medications for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) 2 years after local radiotherapy for nonmetastatic prostate cancer.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively included patients who underwent local external radiotherapy for nonmetastatic prostate cancer in 8 institutions between April 2001 and March 2016. Patients were divided into the medication and no-medication group based on the use of drugs for LUTS before radiotherapy.

Prostatic hyperplasia is very common in elderly men and is a typical disease that reduces quality of life. Histologically, hyperplasia of the prostate gland causes obstruction at the bladder outlet, resulting in symptoms such as a weak urine stream. Various factors have been considered to cause histological enlargement of the prostate, but the underlying cause is still unknown.

A 19-year-old man had been aware of dysuria and urinary incontinence since childhood but did not seek medical attention. He was diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis due to lower urinary tract dysfunction associated with spina bifida occulta and tethered cord syndrome (TCS) due to spinal cord lipoma. After placement of a urethral catheter and antibacterial chemotherapy, the patient was cured of acute pyelonephritis.

We experienced two cases of renal primary synovial sarcoma. Case 1: A 29-year-old man underwent laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and was originally diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. Case 2: A 25-year-old man was treated by open radical nephrectomy since radiographical findings indicated tumor invasion to the ureter causing hydronephrosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between maternal nutrition and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using an animal model, specifically female hypertensive rats, and measures outcomes through various genetic and biological analyses.
  • Three dietary groups were established during pregnancy: standard diet, low-protein diet, and high-fat diet, with observations on the growth and prostate development of male offspring at 48 weeks.
  • Findings revealed that pups on the low-protein diet were underweight at birth and weaning but displayed normal growth by 48 weeks; however, their prostate exhibited significant epithelial growth changes compared to other dietary groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of desmopressin orally disintegrating tablets (ODT) in reducing nighttime urination (nocturia) in male patients while analyzing factors that predict improvements.
  • Conducted at 27 institutions in Japan, the research included 118 male patients and found a persistence rate of about 51.3% after 12 weeks, with many discontinuing treatment due to adverse events, primarily hyponatremia.
  • Results showed significant reductions in nighttime frequency of urination, particularly for patients with larger nighttime urine volumes, indicating that desmopressin ODT is useful for male patients with nocturnal polyuria in real-world settings.
