Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is defined by a significant reduction in renal function, which subsequently impairs coagulation and activates the inflammatory immune response, ultimately resulting in damage to renal tubular epithelial cells (TECs). Platelets are crucial in mediating both inflammatory and coagulation processes. While it is established that platelet activation contributes to the progression of AKI, the precise mechanisms underlying this relationship remain largely unclear.

Previous research has revealed that platelets promote tumor metastasis by binding to circulating tumor cells (CTCs). However, the role of platelets in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of cancer cells at the primary tumor site, the crucial initial step of tumor metastasis, remains to be elucidated. Here, we found that platelet releasate enhanced EMT and motility of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells via AMPK/mTOR-induced autophagy.

Article Synopsis
  • Metastasis is the leading cause of cancer deaths, particularly in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and is linked to high blood platelet counts and tumor expression of ADAM10, which indicate poor patient prognosis.
  • Research showed that platelets increase ADAM10 expression in tumor cells through the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, leading to the shedding of CX3CL1 and promoting cancer cell migration and invasion.
  • The study highlights the potential of targeting the TLR4/ADAM10/CX3CL1 axis as a strategy to inhibit platelet-driven metastasis in HCC, supported by findings from both in vitro and in vivo mouse models.

Infrared solar cells are regarded as candidates for expanding the solar spectrum of c-Si cells, and the window electrodes are usually transparent conductive oxide (TCO) such as widely used indium tin oxide material. However, due to the low transmittance of the TCO in the near-infrared region, most near-infrared light cannot penetrate the electrode and be absorbed by the active layer. Here, the propose a simple procedure to fabricate the window materials with high near-infrared transmittance and high electrical conductivity, namely the hydrogen-doped indium oxide (IHO) films prepared by room temperature magnetron sputtering.

Background: Metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Platelet activation has been implicated in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), whereas the role of platelet in the pathogenesis of PAH remains unclear.

Methods: First, we explored the platelet function of semaxanib' a inhibitor of VEGF receptor (SU5416)/hypoxia mice and monocrotaline-injected rats PAH model.

Sanguinarine, a benzophenanthridine alkaloid, has been described to have an antiplatelet activity. However, its antithrombotic effect and the mechanism of platelet inhibition have not thoroughly been explored. The current study found that sanguinarine had an inhibitory effect on thrombus formation.

The contact angle, as a vital measured parameter of wettability of material surface, has long been in dispute whether it is affected by gravity. Herein, we measured the advancing and receding contact angles on extremely low contact angle hysteresis surfaces under different gravities (1-8G) and found that both of them decrease with the increase of the gravity. The underlying mechanism is revealed to be the contact angle hysteresis and the deformation of the liquid-vapor interface away from the solid surface caused by gradient distribution of the hydrostatic pressure.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast cancer (BC) and prostate cancer (PC) are prevalent among women and men in Western countries, with death risk rates at 14% and 9%, respectively.
  • Hormonal imbalances, specifically abnormal levels of estrogen and androgens, play a crucial role in the development of both cancers, with estrogen promoting BC and influencing androgen production in PC.
  • The interaction of androgens with their receptors can have complex effects on BC types and contribute to both primary and advanced forms of PC, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of these mechanisms to enhance treatment options.

Regulation of intracellular calcium is an important signaling mechanism for cell proliferation in both normal and cancerous cells. In normal epithelial cells, free calcium concentration is essential for cells to enter and accomplish the S phase and the M phase of the cell cycle. In contrast, cancerous cells can pass these phases of the cell cycle with much lower cytoplasmic free calcium concentrations, indicating an alternative mechanism has developed for fulfilling the intracellular calcium requirement for an increased rate of DNA synthesis and mitosis of fast replicating cancerous cells.
