Purpose: We describe the technique, indications and outcomes of an accessory secondary brachytherapy plaque for the treatment of uveal melanoma to provide supplemental tumor coverage for the primary brachytherapy plaque.

Methods: Retrospective case series was performed to identify brachytherapy plaque cases for the treatment of primary uveal melanoma where an accessory secondary plaque was created to improve treatment coverage of the uveal melanoma, and positioned at the time of removal of the primary brachytherapy plaque. Baseline tumor, patient characteristics, and clinical outcomes including tumor control, visual acuity, treatment complications, metastases and death treatment were obtained.

Wastewater containing heavy metals and organic dye pollutants discharged into receiving waters poses a serious environmental concern. Herein, a novel EDTA-chitosan/alginate porous composite bead adsorbent (EC-AB) was reported for the simultaneous removal of lead (Pb(ii)) and methyl blue (MB) complexes from wastewater. Characterization results showed that EC-AB contained plenty of oxygen/nitrogen functional groups.

Purpose: This prospective cohort study examined the use of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to detect in vivo retinal and choroidal variations associated with placental insufficiency, manifesting as fetal growth restriction (FGR) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP).

Methods: Pregnant women were imaged with OCTA from gestational week 16 and every 4 weeks until week 36. Pregnancy outcomes were categorized into three groups: uncomplicated, complicated by late FGR, or complicated by HDP after 32 weeks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to differentiate iris melanoma from iris nevus by comparing intraocular pressure (IOP) and cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) in affected and unaffected eyes.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 39 patients with iris melanoma and 40 with iris nevus, assessing IOP, CDR, and glaucoma diagnoses over nearly 10 years.
  • Findings indicated that iris melanoma patients had significantly higher IOP and CDR in the affected eye compared to the unaffected eye, suggesting that IOP and CDR asymmetry could help in diagnosing iris melanoma.

Purpose: To describe a new retinal phenotype characterized by bilateral, multifocal, subretinal vitelliform lesions along the vascular arcades that we refer to as multifocal vitelliform paravascular retinopathy (MVPR).

Design: Observational case series.

Methods: Multimodal retinal imaging including color fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence and cross sectional and en-face optical coherence tomography was performed to evaluate and characterize the lesions of MVPR.

Background: Automated identification of spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) features can improve retina clinic workflow efficiency as they are able to detect pathologic findings. The purpose of this study was to test a deep learning (DL)-based algorithm for the identification of Idiopathic Full Thickness Macular Hole (IFTMH) features and stages of severity in SD-OCT B-scans.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, subjects solely diagnosed with either IFTMH or Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD) were identified excluding secondary causes of macular holes, any concurrent maculopathies, or incomplete records.

To assess the short-term and long-term effects of a delay in care on visual acuity (VA) in patients requiring intravitreal injections. This retrospective cohort study comprised patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), or retinal vein occlusion (RVO) receiving intravitreal injections. The visual and anatomic outcomes at the next completed visit and at the 1-year follow-up were studied.

We asked whether hyperoxia might induce hypomyelination of the corpus callosum, clinically described as periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) of the severely preterm infant. Mouse pups and their nursing dams were placed in 80% oxygen from P4-P8, then removed to room air until P11. Corpus callosal sections were probed myelin immunofluorescence, tested for myelin basic protein concentration by Western blot, and both glial fibrillary acidic protein levels and apoptosis quantified.

Article Synopsis
  • - Blue light exposure can cause damage to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), leading to cell death through a process called necroptosis, which is associated with inflammatory responses related to retinal degeneration.
  • - In the study, the researchers used the ARPE-19 human cell line to analyze the effects of blue light and found that minocycline, a pharmacological agent, significantly reduced RPE cell death and helped maintain protein balance in the cells.
  • - Blue light exposure triggered the release of specific proteins indicating necroptosis, and while inhibitors targeting necroptosis improved cell survival, apoptosis inhibitors did not have the same effect, highlighting the importance of targeting necroptosis pathways for potential therapies

  • * Researchers conducted whole-genome resequencing of 418 rapeseed accessions to identify genetic factors that influence agronomic traits, discovering 628 associated loci and candidate genes for 56 important traits.
  • * The study highlighted significant mutations in genes like the ribosome recycling factor (BnRRF) that relate to seed weight, providing valuable insights for future genomic-assisted breeding of rapeseed.

Ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) materials glow persistently in the dark, which offers new exciting possibilities in the fields of anti-counterfeiting, photoelectric devices and biological imaging. However, the development of single-component UOP materials remains a great challenge. Herein, we develop a single component organic supramolecular zipper system with a lifetime up to 0.

Involvement of companions is a critical aspect of patient-centered care. This retrospective cross-sectional study examined patients who were asked, by utilizing electronic medical record (EMR) preset questions (SmartPhrase template), if they wanted another individual called during the assessment and plan portion of an ophthalmology visit. Of 518 patients, 14.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in diabetic patients post-cataract surgery, analyzing data from the Cleveland Clinic between 2012 and 2018.
  • Researchers examined visual acuity and OCT images before and after surgery, using statistical models to evaluate the results, focusing on changes in BCVA during the first year and how initial central subfield thickness affected these changes.
  • Findings revealed that patients without diabetic retinopathy experienced the greatest visual improvements, while those with more severe stages of the disease had significantly less gain in visual acuity after surgery.
