Purpose: To assess the incidence and degree of retinal displacement following nonprimary retinectomy in macula-involving rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) complicated by proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR).

Methods: A retrospective interventional case series was conducted on eyes that underwent a second surgery involving retinectomy for complex macula-involving RRD between December 2011 and September 2023 at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Clinical records and imaging were analyzed to assess the incidence and degree of retinal displacement using postoperative fundus autofluorescence (FAF).

Retinal detachment (RD) is a vision-threatening ocular emergency that necessitates rapid diagnosis and intervention. This review examines the evolving role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in RD by synthesizing the literature on preoperative biomarkers and advanced image modalities that inform diagnosis, prognosis, and surgical planning. We evaluated studies employing spectral-domain OCT, swept-source OCT, OCT angiography, adaptive optics OCT, and en face OCT to assess photoreceptor integrity, retinal detachment height, intraretinal cystic cavities, outer retinal corrugations and undulation, and macular involvement.

Purpose Of Review: The role of topical and subconjunctival antibiotics in reducing infection risk in major ocular surgeries remains unclear despite their widespread use. This review discusses the efficacy of both administration routes across various forms of surgery, underscoring evidence-based recommendations for quality practice patterns and limitations in current research.

Recent Findings: Although intracameral antibiotics consistently result in low infection rates in phacoemulsification procedures, there may be some role for topical and subconjunctival antibiotic use, also influenced by regional preferences.

To assess the content and medical accuracy of retina-related patient discussions on Reddit, an anonymous social media platform, to better understand the main concerns and reliability of a highly accessible resource. A cross-sectional analysis was performed of the top 20 posts and top 3 comments from 2011 to 2022 on the Reddit subforums r/Optometry and r/EyeTriage containing the following keywords: "retinal detachment", "macular edema", "macular degeneration", and "diabetic retinopathy". This study assessed 407 posts and comments.

Purpose Of Review: The goal of this review is to summarize emerging clinical trial and real world evidence for faricimab and high dose aflibercept (8 mg), two recently approved treatments for wet age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema.

Recent Findings: Faricimab, a bispecific monoclonal antibody targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and angiopoietin-2, and high-dose aflibercept have demonstrated significant potential for extending treatment intervals while maintaining efficacy. Pivotal clinical trials such as YOSEMITE, and RHINE established faricimab to be noninferior to standard anti-VEGF therapy with superior durability.

Purpose: Clinical trial cohorts frequently differ demographically from the overall population receiving treatment for the condition under study. Our study describes the racial, ethnic, and gender composition of the cohorts of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) macular edema (ME) clinical trials and compares this to the racial, ethnic, and gender composition of patients undergoing treatment for ME secondary to RVO from the (Intelligent Research in Sight) IRIS Registry.

Design: Retrospective observational case series Subjects: Participants in RVO-ME clinical trials that met the following inclusion criteria: conducted in the United States of America, Phase III completed, data reported between January 1, 2000, and January 1, 2020, and demographic information reported with results.

Importance: Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) are federally funded community health clinics that provide comprehensive care to underserved populations, making them potential opportunities to offer eye care and address unmet health care needs. Evaluating the presence of eye care services at FQHCs in Florida is important in understanding and addressing possible gaps in care for the state's large uninsured and underserved populations.

Objective: To determine whether FQHCs in Florida are currently offering eye care services, where they are available, what services are being offered, and who provides them.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at 20 eyes from 14 patients who had surgery due to problems caused by two eye diseases: sickle cell retinopathy and diabetic retinopathy.
  • Most of the surgeries were done because of serious issues like retinal detachments or bleeding inside the eye.
  • The results showed that the surgery didn't really improve vision for most patients, and only some had successful fixes to their retinal problems.

Purpose Of Review: Vitreous floaters, characterized by the perception of spots or shadows in the visual field, commonly result from posterior vitreous detachment and can cause chronic symptoms in affected patients. The diagnosis of posterior vitreous detachment is typically determined clinically and can sometimes be confirmed with optical coherence topography (OCT) [1 ▪▪ ] . The objective of this review is to review management options for symptomatic vitreous floaters.

Importance: Given that resident physician financial strain has been associated with poor outcomes, objective metrics to forecast financial well-being may be useful to (1) applicants when evaluating ophthalmology residency programs and (2) programs when determining resident benefits.

Objectives: To determine and compare the relative value of ophthalmology resident stipends plus benefits when adjusted for cost-of-living expenses and to analyze program characteristics associated with greater resident net incomes.

Design, Setting, And Participants: In this cross-sectional study, the American Medical Association's Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database was used to identify US Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited ophthalmology residency programs.
