Invasive Breast Cancer: Prognostic Value of Peritumoral Edema Identified at Preoperative MR Imaging.

Purpose To determine the prognostic value of peritumoral edema identified at preoperative breast magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for disease recurrence in patients with invasive breast cancer. Materials and Methods Between January 2011 and December 2012, 353 women (median age, 49 years; range, 27-77 years) with invasive breast cancer who had undergone preoperative MR imaging and mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery were identified. Two radiologists independently reviewed peritumoral edema on the basis of the degree of the signal intensity surrounding the tumor on T2-weighted images.

Refolding of autodisplayed anti-NEF scFv through oxidation with glutathione for immunosensors.

In this study, a single-domain antibody against negative regulatory factor (anti-NEF scFv) was autodisplayed on the outer membrane of Escherichia coli and used to detect NEF in an immunoassay based on fluorescence-activated cell sorting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and surface plasmon resonance biosensors. Next, the autodisplayed single-domain antibody was oxidized to form disulfide bonds by using glutathione, and the change in NEF-binding activity of anti-NEF scFv was analyzed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting-based immunoassay, chromogenic immunoassay, and surface plasmon resonance biosensor. For each type of immunoassays the anti-NEF scFv on the isolated outer membrane showed more NEF binding activity after the disulfide bond formation by glutathione.

Moxibustion Therapy in Traditional Mongolian Medicine.

From the medical history of traditional Eastern Asian and Tibetan medicine, the origin and development of moxibustion seems to be closely related to Mongolia. To explore the current clinical practice of moxibustion in Mongolia, we visited a teaching hospital, the Traditional Medical Science, Technology and Production Corporation of Mongolia, in February 2014. Many types of moxibustion are found to be used, and various modalities and methods are practiced based on the principles of traditional Mongolian medicine.

Heart rate at first postdischarge visit and outcomes in patients with heart failure.

Objective: Heart rate control is important to prevent adverse outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF). However, postdischarge activity may worsen heart rate control, resulting in readmission. This study aimed to explore the implications of the heart rate differences between discharge and the first outpatient visit (D-O diff).

Is external fixation needed for the treatment of tibial fractures with acute compartment syndrome?

Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) after tibial fracture carries a risk of various complications, including infection, delayed union, nonunion, nerve damage, and poor prognosis. For the treatment of fractures with ACS, fasciotomy is conducted, and the method to stabilise the fracture has to be considered. Thirty-five patients who underwent surgery for ACS with tibial shaft fractures were evaluated, and the results of initial internal fixation (Group I, 20 patients) and initial external fixation (Group II, 15 patients) were analysed.

Discovery of thienopyrrolotriazine derivatives to protect mitochondrial function against Aβ-induced neurotoxicity.

Recovery of mitochondrial dysfunction has gained increasing attention as an alternative therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent studies suggested that the 18 kDa mitochondrial translocator protein (TSPO) has the potential to serve as a drug target for the treatment of AD. In this study, we generated a structure-based pharmacophore model and virtually screened a commercial library, identifying SVH07 as a virtual hit, which contained a tricyclic core structure, thieno[2',3':4,5]pyrrolo[1,2-d][1,2,4]triazine group.

Emergence of rifampin-resistant staphylococci after rifaximin administration in cirrhotic patients.

Objectives: Rifaximin, a poorly absorbed antibiotics, has gut-specific therapeutic effects. Although frequently prescribed to manipulate intestinal luminal bacterial population in various diseases, the possible induction of antibacterial cross-resistance to a target pathogen is a major concern in long-term rifaximin administration. We aimed to evaluate whether rifampin-resistant staphylococci could evolve after rifaximin treatment in cirrhotic patients.

Kisspeptin inhibits cancer growth and metastasis via activation of EIF2AK2.

Kisspeptin is a protein encoded by the KISS1 gene, which has been reported to suppress the metastatic capabilities of various types of cancer cells, through the activation of its G‑protein coupled receptor GPR54. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the involvement of kisspeptin‑mediated signaling in the inhibition of cancer cell migration and invasion have yet to be elucidated. The present in vitro cell proliferation, migration and invasion assays and in vivo experimental metastasis studies demonstrated that kisspeptin‑induced eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α kinase 2 (EIF2AK2) activation suppressed the metastatic capabilities of several types of cancer cells.

Validation of prognostic scores to predict short-term mortality in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure.

Background And Aim: The aim of this study was to validate the chronic liver failure-sequential organ failure assessment score (CLIF-SOFAs), CLIF consortium organ failure score (CLIF-C OFs), CLIF-C acute-on-chronic liver failure score (CLIF-C ACLFs), and CLIF-C acute decompensation score in Korean chronic liver disease patients with acute deterioration.

Methods: Acute-on-chronic liver failure was defined by either the Asian Pacific Association for the study of the Liver ACLF Research Consortium (AARC) or CLIF-C criteria. The diagnostic performances for short-term mortality were compared by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve.

Trichilemmal cysts are common fluid-filled growths that arise from the isthmus of the hair follicle. They can form rapidly multiplying trichilemmal tumors-, also called proliferating trichilemmal cysts, which are typically benign. Rarely, proliferating trichilemmal cysts can become cancerous.

In silico probing and biological evaluation of SETDB1/ESET-targeted novel compounds that reduce tri-methylated histone H3K9 (H3K9me3) level.

ERG-associated protein with the SET domain (ESET/SET domain bifurcated 1/SETDB1/KMT1E) is a histone lysine methyltransferase (HKMT) and it preferentially tri-methylates lysine 9 of histone H3 (H3K9me3). SETDB1/ESET leads to heterochromatin condensation and epigenetic gene silencing. These functional changes are reported to correlate with Huntington's disease (HD) progression and mood-related disorders which make SETDB1/ESET a viable drug target.

Melatonin-induced KiSS1 expression inhibits triple-negative breast cancer cell invasiveness.

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women, and its metastasis increases the risk of mortality. Melatonin, a hormone that regulates the circadian rhythm, has been revealed to inhibit breast cancer growth and metastasis. However, its involvement in highly metastatic triple-negative breast cancer cells is yet to be elucidated.

Prognostic Importance of the Site of Recurrence in Patients With Metastatic Recurrent Cervical Cancer.

Purpose: The clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with metastatic recurrent cervical cancer remain poorly understood. The goals of the present study were to investigate the survival outcomes according to the recurrence site in a large cohort of cervical cancer patients.

Methods And Materials: Of 1322 patients with primary cervical cancer from 2000 to 2013, 205 with recurrence after primary or adjuvant postoperative radiation were enrolled retrospectively.

In silico-designed novel non-peptidic ABAD L hot spot mimetics reverse Aβ-induced mitochondrial impairments in vitro.

Present work aimed to introduce non-peptidic ABAD loop D (L ) hot spot mimetics as ABAD-Aβ inhibitors. A full-length atomistic model of ABAD-Aβ complex was built as a scaffold to launch the lead design and its topology later verified by cross-checking the computational mutagenesis results with that of in vitro data. Thereafter, the interactions of prime Aβ-binding L residues-Tyr101, Thr108, and Thr110-were translated into specific pharmacophore features and this hypothesis subsequently used as a virtual screen query.

Hemodynamic changes caused by acupuncture in healthy volunteers: a prospective, single-arm exploratory clinical study.

Background: Radial pressure pulse wave (RPPW) examination has been a key diagnostic component of traditional Chinese medicine. The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in RPPW along with various hemodynamic variables after acupuncture stimulation and to examine the validity of pulse diagnosis as a modern diagnostic tool.

Methods: We conducted acupuncture stimulation at both ST36 acupuncture points in 25 healthy volunteers.

Early range of motion exercise in pediatric patients with olecranon fractures treated with tension band suture with double loops and double knots.

Background: Pediatric patients with olecranon fractures are uncommon. The tension band suture technique was introduced to reduce the burden of implant removal and other complications. However, to our knowledge, early range of motion (ROM) exercise has not been introduced in this population of patients.

Hepatic angiosarcoma with clinical and histological features of Kasabach-Merritt syndrome.

Hepatic angiosarcoma is a mesenchymal tumor originating from liver sinusoidal endothelial cells. It is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm accounting for less than 1% of primary malignant liver tumors. The deregulated coagulopathy that can be seen in hepatic angiosarcoma fulfills the clinical diagnostic criteria of disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Variance components estimation for farrowing traits of three purebred pigs in Korea.

Objective: This study was conducted to estimate breed-specific variance components for total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA) and mortality rate from birth through weaning including stillbirths (MORT) of three main swine breeds in Korea. In addition, the importance of including maternal genetic and service sire effects in estimation models was evaluated.

Methods: Records of farrowing traits from 6,412 Duroc, 18,020 Landrace, and 54,254 Yorkshire sows collected from January 2001 to September 2016 from different farms in Korea were used in the analysis.

Identification of Metabolic Biomarkers Using Serial F-FDG PET/CT for Prediction of Recurrence in Advanced Epithelial Ovarian Cancer.

Purpose: To evaluate the prognostic value of metabolic parameters derived from serial F fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC).

Methods: Thirteen patients with advanced EOC who received surgical staging and adjuvant platinum-based combination chemotherapy were prospectively enrolled. F-FDG PET/CT was performed before and after the surgical staging, and after third cycle of chemotherapy.

Pyrosequencing-based assessment of microbial community shifts in leachate from animal carcass burial lysimeter.

This study examined the use of microbial community structure as a bio-indicator of decomposition levels. High-throughput pyrosequencing technology was used to assess the shift in microbial community of leachate from animal carcass lysimeter. The leachate samples were collected monthly for one year and a total of 164,639 pyrosequencing reads were obtained and used in the taxonomic classification and operational taxonomy units (OTUs) distribution analysis based on sequence similarity.

Synergy of cAMP and calcium signaling pathways in CFTR regulation.

Cystic fibrosis results from mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) chloride channel, leading to defective apical chloride transport. Patients also experience overactivation of inflammatory processes, including increased calcium signaling. Many investigations have described indirect effects of calcium signaling on CFTR or other calcium-activated chloride channels; here, we investigate the direct response of CFTR to calmodulin-mediated calcium signaling.
