Background: Although previous studies have examined the cost of treating individual childhood cancers in low-income and middle-income countries, to the authors' knowledge none has examined the overall cost and cost-effectiveness of operating a childhood cancer treatment center. Herein, the authors examined the cost and sources of financing of a pediatric cancer unit in Hospital Nacional de Ninos Benjamin Bloom in El Salvador, and make estimates of cost-effectiveness.

Methods: Administrative data regarding costs and volumes of inputs were obtained for 2016 for the pediatric cancer unit.

Background: Despite the importance of estimating population level cancer outcomes, most registries do not collect critical events such as relapse. Attempts to use health administrative data to identify these events have focused on older adults and have been mostly unsuccessful. We developed and tested administrative data-based algorithms in a population-based cohort of adolescents and young adults with cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • - Changes in the microbial community in the lungs of COPD patients with CT-defined abnormalities differ from those in patients without such changes and healthy subjects, suggesting a link between lung structure and microbiome.
  • - Analysis of lung samples from COPD patients revealed that those with severe subtypes showed a higher abundance of Streptococcus, while mild COPD and healthy individuals had more Prevotella, indicating distinct bacterial compositions.
  • - The study concludes that the presence of CT-detectable changes in the lungs is associated with significant alterations in bacterial communities, which could affect the interaction between these microbes and the host's immune system.

The objective of this paper is to develop a noncontact, noninvasive system for detecting and monitoring subcutaneous infection occurring at the tissue and osseointegrated prosthesis interface. It is known that the local pH of tissue can change due to infection. Therefore, the sensing system integrates two parts, namely, pH-sensitive thin films that can be coated onto prosthesis surfaces prior to them being implanted and an electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) algorithm that can reconstruct the spatial permittivity distribution of a region of space in a noncontact fashion.

Airway remodelling in asthma remains poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the association of airway remodelling measured on bronchial biopsies with 1) lung function impairment and 2) thoracic quantitative computed tomography (QCT)-derived morphometry and densitometry measures of proximal airway remodelling and air trapping.Subjects were recruited from a single centre.

Theoretical analysis of the dip coating process of uniformly wetting and selectively wetting substrates with a shear-thinning power-law fluid is presented. The viscosity is modeled by a three-constant Ellis model that allows for Newtonian and power-law fluids at low and high shear, respectively. The effect of an opposing Marangoni stress is studied on the entrained film thickness.

Purpose Children with cancer often receive high-intensity (HI) medical care at the end-of-life (EOL). Previous studies have been limited to single centers or lacked detailed clinical data. We determined predictors of and trends in HI-EOL care by linking population-based clinical and health-services databases.

Background: Venous access device (VAD) occlusion from intraluminal thrombus is a common complication during childhood cancer treatment. Current practice at many institutions is to assess VAD position with a chest X-ray (CXR) prior to intraluminal administration of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). We aimed to determine the utility of this practice.

Background: Data from population-based cancer registries are increasingly used to conduct research and guide policy. However, few validation studies of cancer registry data have been conducted, particularly among children. We therefore aimed to determine the validity of pediatric diagnostic data in the Ontario Cancer Registry (OCR).

Disarticulation resections are required for treatment of variety of pathologies of the jaws. These resections are mostly carried out through extraoral approach, which bear significant postoperative morbidity. The transoral approach may be used for this purpose in benign pathological cases of the mandible to limit the postoperative morbidity of extraoral approach, as it provides sufficient access not only for resection and disarticulation but also for immediate reconstruction.

Purpose Of Review: Outcomes for children with cancer have improved dramatically. Although the contribution of disease biology and therapy resistance to treatment failure continues to be a focus of intense research efforts, the role of medication nonadherence on the part of caregivers or patients has been relatively neglected. Efforts to further improve childhood cancer cure rates must include a focus on improving medication adherence.

Ongoing investigation from the Pediatric Anesthesia NeuroDevelopment Assessment (PANDA) study hopes to examine the long-term effect on cognitive and language development of a single anesthetic exposure in children undergoing inguinal hernia repair. The fifth PANDA Symposium, held in April 2016, continued the mission of previous symposia to examine evidence from basic science and clinical studies on potential neurotoxic effects of anesthetics on developing brain. At the 2016 Symposium, a panel of specialists from nonsurgical pediatric disciplines including anesthesiology, radiology, neurology, gastroenterology, oncology, cardiology, and critical care reviewed use of anesthesia in their practices, including how concern over possible neurodevelopmental effects of early childhood anesthetic exposure has changed discussion with patients and families regarding risks and benefits of imaging studies and interventional procedures involving sedation or anesthesia.

Population-based cancer registries generate estimates of incidence and survival that are essential for cancer surveillance, research, and control strategies. Although data on cancer stage allow meaningful assessments of changes in cancer incidence and outcomes, stage is not recorded by most population-based cancer registries. The main method of staging adult cancers is the TNM classification.

Purpose: Although most children with cancer live in low- and middle-income countries, measurements of childhood cancer burden in such countries have been restricted to incidence rates from a few subnational cancer registries and mortality rates from vital statistics. We aimed to provide alternative burden estimates by using nationally representative longitudinal survey-derived mortality rates.

Methods: We examined cancer deaths in childhood (1 month to 14 years of age) in the Million Death Study, a cohort of > 27,000 pediatric deaths in India on the basis of enhanced verbal autopsies.
