The heavy fermion material UTe is a candidate topological superconductor that exhibits multiple magnetic field-induced superconducting phases. One such phase exists only at fields greater than 40 tesla, a considerable scale given its critical temperature of only 2 K. Here, we extend measurements of this state with fields outside of the crystallographic plane and reveal its core structure: The superconducting phase wraps around the axis in a halo-like fashion and appears to be stabilized by a field component perpendicular to the magnetic easy axis.

The magnetic properties and phase diagrams of = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets are well-established with copper-containing coordination polymers as the platform of choice due to their low energy scales and ease of chemical substitution. The inability to uncover orbitally resolved components of the magnetization has, however, been a long-standing barrier to greater understanding of high field spin state transitions. In this work, we combine pulsed field magnetization, optical spectroscopy, and magnetic circular dichroism with complementary electronic structure calculations to unravel orbital-specific contributions to the magnetism in the linear chain quantum magnet [CuL(HO)(pyz)](ClO) [L 5-methyl-2-pyridone; pyz pyrazine].

Background: Pathogenic variants of fused in sarcoma (FUS) cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FUS-ALS), with evidence of gain of function. Jacifusen is an antisense oligonucleotide targeting FUS pre-mRNA, previously shown to delay neurodegeneration in a mouse model and potentially slow functional decline in a first-in-human study. Here, we sought to further evaluate use of jacifusen as a treatment for FUS-ALS.

Objective: Determine the association between diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) burden (number of MetS criteria fulfilled) and pain, neuropathy severity, and fiber type involvement in individuals with established polyneuropathy.

Methods: The Peripheral Neuropathy Research Registry was queried for individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes (DPN) and non-diabetic peripheral neuropathy (cryptogenic sensory polyneuropathy and prediabetes) using cross-sectional observational data. Associations between diabetes or MetS burden and pain presence (yes/no), neuropathy severity (Total Neuropathy Score reduced), and fiber type involvement (pinprick, vibration, and proprioception examination-small, large, mixed) using logistic, linear, and multinomial regression models were determined.

HfCuSi-type pnictogen compounds have recently been shown to be a versatile platform for designing materials with topologically nontrivial band structures. However, these phases require strict control over the electron count to tune the Fermi level, which can only be achieved in compositions with AMPn and AMPn (A = lanthanides, M = transition metals, Pn = pnictogens P-Bi) charge distribution. While such lanthanide compounds have been thoroughly studied as candidate magnetic topological materials, their heavy element analogs with uranium and bismuth remain largely underexplored.

The risk for transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus from dairy cows to humans is currently low; however, personal protective equipment (PPE) use during work activities on dairy farms has not been well described. PPE use can protect farmworkers when they are working with highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1)-infected cows. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) offered PPE to all Colorado farms before or during an A(H5N1) outbreak in cows in 2024.

This article examines the Attlee government's performance as a crisis manager in relation to tobacco policy in the years prior to the publication in 1950 of research linking smoking and cancer. Health concerns played no role in tobacco policy before 1950, and the government hoped more teenagers would take up smoking and pay tobacco duty. Tobacco took on added significance as an economic issue because policy-makers had so little room for manoeuvre.
