Evaluating peer-influence processes in a prison-based therapeutic community: a dynamic network approach.

Background: The Therapeutic Community (TC) is a common treatment modality for incarcerated individuals with substance use disorders. TCs rely on peer group processes to promote lasting behavioral and identity change, yet prior research has not adequately tested the peer influence mechanisms underlying the theoretical model. This study applied dynamic network analysis to estimate peer influence processes central to TC philosophy.

Color Doppler ultrasound and computed tomographic angiography for perforator mapping in DIEP flap breast reconstruction revisited: A cohort study.

Introduction: Preoperative imaging by Computed Tomographic Angiography (CTA) has been promoted a gold standard tool for perforator mapping in abdominally based microsurgical breast reconstruction, while Color Doppler Ultrasound (CDU) has lost its popularity. As the CTA X-ray exposure might have long-term consequences for patients, CDU has regained importance for preoperative workup in our center. Our aim was to revisit the role of CDU by comparing the reliability of CDU and CTA in predicting intraoperative perforator selection.

Administration of certain sedative drugs is associated with variation in sonographic and radiographic splenic size in healthy cats.

Ultrasonography and radiography are standard diagnostic tests for cats with suspected splenic disease, however published information on outside sources of variation are currently lacking. The purpose of this prospective, randomized, crossover group study was to evaluate effects of common sedative drugs on the sonographic and radiographic characteristics of the spleen in healthy cats. Fifteen healthy adult research cats were randomly assigned into one of three groups corresponding to different sequences of administration of five sedative drugs/drug combinations (acepromazine; butorphanol; dexmedetomidine; midazolam and butorphanol (MB); and dexmedetomidine, butorphanol, and ketamine (DBK)), administered at 1-week intervals.

Isogenic-induced endothelial cells enhance osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells on silk fibroin scaffold.

We investigated the role of induced endothelial cells (iECs) in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)/iECs co-culture and assessed their osteogenic ability on silk fibroin nanofiber scaffolds. The osteogenic differentiation was assessed by the ALP assay, calcium assay and gene expression studies. The osteogenic differentiation of the iECs co-cultures was found to be higher than the MSCs group and proximal to endothelial cells (ECs) co-cultures.

Combination of Searches for Invisible Higgs Boson Decays with the ATLAS Experiment.

Dark matter particles, if sufficiently light, may be produced in decays of the Higgs boson. This Letter presents a statistical combination of searches for H→invisible decays where H is produced according to the standard model via vector boson fusion, Z(ℓℓ)H, and W/Z(had)H, all performed with the ATLAS detector using 36.1  fb^{-1} of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV at the LHC.

Evaluation of automated erythrocyte methodology in new world camelids using the ADVIA 2120 hematology analyzer.

Background: Accurate erythrocyte measurements with ADVIA hematology analyzers require isovolumetric cell sphering in one reaction and hemolysis in another. However, camelid erythrocytes are resistant to sphering and osmotic lysis, and no published evaluation of ADVIA methods for camelids exists.

Objectives: The objectives were to demonstrate whether camelid erythrocytes sphere in the ADVIA red blood cell/platelet (RBC/PLT) reagent and lyse in the ADVIA cyanide HGB reagent, and to determine optimal ADVIA settings for camelids.

Hemophagocytosis and Histoplasma-like fungal infection in 32 cats.

Histoplasmosis is one of the most common systemic fungal diseases in cats from the United States. It commonly causes respiratory or disseminated disease and is often associated with one or more cytopenias. Here, we describe 32 cats in which a Histoplasma-like fungal infection was associated with concurrent hemophagia in at least one sample site, commonly spleen, bone marrow, liver, and/or lymph node.

Plastic and reconstructive surgery is characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity. Although Plastic surgery offers a wide range of reliable surgical treatment options independent departments for plastic and reconstructive surgery are not present in every university clinic or leading hospital in Germany. However, the ongoing improvements especially in the field of reconstructive microsurgery enabled and enhanced the treatment of complex defects in order to restore function as well as cosmetic outcome.

The XPF-ERCC1 Complex Is Essential for Genome Stability and Is Involved in the Mechanism of Gene Targeting in .

The XPF-ERCC1 complex, a highly conserved structure-specific endonuclease, functions in multiple DNA repair pathways that are pivotal for maintaining genome stability, including nucleotide excision repair, interstrand crosslink repair, and homologous recombination. XPF-ERCC1 incises double-stranded DNA at double-strand/single-strand junctions, making it an ideal enzyme for processing DNA structures that contain partially unwound strands. Here, we have examined the role of the XPF-ERCC1 complex in the model bryophyte which exhibits uniquely high gene targeting frequencies.

Reconstruction of Spinal Soft Tissue Defects With Perforator Flaps From the Paraspinal Region.

Background/aim: Reconstruction of spinal soft tissue defects is challenging, especially when neural structures or prosthetic material are exposed. They should be covered with well-vascularized tissue such as paraspinal perforator flaps.

Materials And Methods: This is a retrospective study of soft tissue reconstructions with paraspinal perforator flaps from 2011 to 2018.

Food Insecure College Students and Objective Measurements of Their Unused Meal Plans.

Some researchers have proposed the prevalence of food insecurity among college students is high due to students' meal plans providing insufficient meals. The association between college students' food security status and their meal plans have not yet been examined. In this study, United States (US) first year college students ( = 534) self-reported their food security status in the Fall 2015 and/or Spring 2016 semester(s).

A Comparison of Team Sport Volume Surveyed Between High School and Club Sport Coaches.

Background: Club sport participation is increasingly common among high school athletes. Sport participation characteristics may vary widely between the high school and club sport settings. However, there have been no large-scale comparisons of sport participation volume between high school and club teams from similar sports.

Tissue engineering for paediatric patients.

The effects of oncological treatment, congenital anomalies, traumatic injuries and post-infection damage critically require sufficient amounts of tissue for structural and functional surgical reconstructions. The patient’s own body is typically the gold standard source of transplant material, but in children autologous tissue is available only in small quantities and with severe morbidity at donor sites. Engineering of tissue grafts starting from a small amount of autologous material, combined with suitable surgical manipulation of the recipient site, is expected to enhance child and adolescent health, and to offer functional restoration for long-term wellbeing.

The Preparation of the Recipient Site in Fat Grafting: A Comprehensive Review of the Preclinical Evidence.

Background: Several methods to prepare the recipient site in fat grafting have been proposed in recent decades. However, to date, these procedures have never been reviewed exhaustively. [New concept for microsurgical education: The training academy of the German Working Group for Microsurgery of Peripheral Nerves and Vessels: Results of a 4-year evaluation].

Introduction: A recent survey among plastic surgery residents and directors of microsurgical clinics demonstrates a great interest in high- quality microsurgery education. Unfortunately, due to economic pressures, limited operating resources as well as forensic considerations, it has become a challenge to provide sufficient on-the-job training, which needs to be shifted outside of the OR. To promote microsurgical teaching, the German-speaking Working Group for Microsurgery of Peripheral Nerves and Vessels (DAM) organises two-day microsurgery academies to provide interested colleagues with a broad spectrum of microsurgical procedures.

POLQ plays a key role in the repair of CRISPR/Cas9-induced double-stranded breaks in the moss Physcomitrella patens.

Double-stranded breaks can be repaired by different mechanisms such as homologous recombination (HR), classical nonhomologous end joining (C-NHEJ) and alternative end joining (Alt-EJ). Polymerase Q (POLQ) has been proposed to be the main factor involved in Alt-EJ-mediated DNA repair. Here we describe the role of POLQ in DNA repair and gene targeting in Physcomitrella patens.

Vascularized Bone Autograft for the Treatment of Chondroblastoma of the Talus at Imminent Risk of Joint Breakdown: Three Case Reports.

Surgical treatment options in a chondroblastoma of the talus breaching the subchondral layer with imminent risk of talar collapse in the weightbearing area are limited. A joint-preserving surgery should be advocated. Because current treatment options such as curettage, cryosurgery, or radiofrequency ablation may not be able to prevent a talar dome breakdown in large defects, nonvascularized bone grafting has been advocated to fill the void.

Friendship as a social mechanism influencing body mass index (BMI) among emerging adults.

Background: Social relationships have been proposed as a significant factor shaping obesity risk. The first year of college, a period of major social, behavioral, and weight changes, provides a context well-suited to tracking longitudinally the impact of shifting friendships on weight outcomes. This study sought to identify social mechanisms impacting BMI change among emerging adults.

Introduction: This report serves to publicize the research of academic institutions for Plastic Surgery within our society DGPRÄC in 2017/2018 and sequels the funding report of 2015/2016. Applications to public, non-public, or industrial funding organizations were evaluated. At the same time, this paper analyses the number of approved DFG applications in Plastic, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery in the GEPRIS system.
