Tumor immune evasion is intricately linked to malignant tumor progression and contributes to the failure of anti-cancer immunotherapy. Serine/threonine protein kinase 25 (STK25) has been previously implicated in the progression of various neoplastic diseases. However, the function of STK25 in the colorectal cancer (CRC) microenvironment remains unclear.

Ferroptosis is a specific type of lipid peroxide-mediated cell death which is crucial in tumor suppression. While the mitochondrial carrier homolog 2 (MTCH2) is implicated in lipid homeostasis and mitochondrial metabolism, its role in ferroptosis and colorectal cancer (CRC) remains uncharacterized. Here, MTCH2 is identified as a crucial regulator of ferroptosis in CRC progression.

Gastroesophageal junction cancer (GEJ) is typically investigated alongside gastric or esophageal cancers. However, separate molecular profiles and immune cell infiltration of GEJ remain largely unknown. This study screened for hub genes in GEJ, studied their function and regulation in biological processes, and investigated their relationship with the infiltration of immune cells into tumors.

Chemoresistance is an ongoing challenge for colorectal cancer (CRC) that significantly compromises the anti-tumor efficacy of current drugs. Identifying effective targets or drugs for overcoming chemoresistance is urgently needed. Our previous study showed that WFDC3 served as a tumor suppressor that hindered CRC metastasis.

Background: Somatic copy number alterations (SCNAs) are pivotal in cancer progression and patient prognosis. Dysregulated long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), modulated by SCNAs, significantly impact tumorigenesis, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Nonetheless, the functional significance of lncRNAs induced by SCNAs in CRC remains largely unexplored.

Article Synopsis
  • - The research investigated the link between lipid accumulation product (LAP) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in US adults, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2013 to 2018.
  • - Results showed a significant positive relationship between higher LAP levels and the likelihood of developing CKD, low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and albuminuria; this relationship varied based on diabetes status and sex.
  • - A nonlinear association was identified, suggesting that LAP's impact on CKD and albuminuria becomes more pronounced beyond certain thresholds, emphasizing the need for considering these factors in assessing kidney health.

Article Synopsis
  • This study talks about using a traditional Chinese medicine called Si-jun-zi decoction (SJZD) to help treat kidney diseases, especially a problem called renal fibrosis (RF).
  • Researchers found that SJZD improved kidney function and reduced inflammation in mice with kidney issues and identified important ingredients like Quercetin and Kaempferol that help with this.
  • The study also discovered that SJZD works by targeting different pathways in the body and helps protect the kidneys through various methods, making it a multi-faceted treatment.

Marek's disease (MD), caused by the Marek's disease virus (MDV), is a common infectious tumor disease in chickens and was the first neoplastic disease preventable by vaccination. However, the vaccine cannot completely prevent virulent MDV infections, allowing both the vaccine and virulent MDV to coexist in the same chicken for extended periods. This study aims to investigate the changes in viral load of the very virulent strain Md5 and the rHVT-IBD vaccine in different chicken tissues using a real-time PCR assay.

Background: Increasing evidence suggests that DXS253E is critical for cancer development and progression, but the function and potential mechanism of DXS253E in colorectal cancer (CRC) remain largely unknown. In this study, we evaluated the clinical significance and explored the underlying mechanism of DXS253E in CRC.

Methods: DXS253E expression in cancer tissues was investigated using the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: As a representative classical prescription, Sijunzi decoction has powerful therapeutic effects on spleen-stomach qi insufficiency. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, diffuse, and non-specifically inflammatory disorder, the etiology of which still remains unclear. In the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) perspective, splenic asthenia is the primary cause of UC.

Anastomotic leakage (AL), one of the most severe complications in rectal surgery, is often diagnosed late because of the low specificity of the clinical symptoms and limitations of current clinical investigations. Identification of patients with early AL remains challenging. Here, we explored the protein expression profiles of AL patients to provide potential biomarkers to identify AL in patients who undergo surgery for rectal cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • Estrogen helps protect against colorectal cancer (CRC) mainly through a special receptor called ERβ.
  • A protein named WFDC3 acts as a tumor suppressor, helping estrogen stop cancer from spreading by working with ERβ and affecting another protein called TGFBR1.
  • High levels of WFDC3 in tumor cells could mean better outcomes for CRC patients, suggesting that targeting this protein might help in treating the disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer genome screening has revealed complex genetic variants like copy number variations (CNVs) and changes in gene expression, but traditional methods may not efficiently capture individual molecular differences among patients.
  • To address this, a multi-dimensional approach was used to analyze gene dosage effects on mRNA and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression in colorectal cancer patients, leading to the identification of significant regulatory triplets related to these gene expressions.
  • The study highlighted 165 coherent gene motifs linked to CNVs and gene expression changes, emphasizing the importance of individualized data in personalized medicine, and suggesting LSM14B as a potential therapeutic target in colorectal cancer.

Genomic instability plays a key role in the initiation and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). Although cancer driver genes in CRC have been well characterized, identifying novel genes associated with carcinogenesis and treatment remains challenging because of tumor heterogeneity. Here, we analyzed the genomic alterations of 45 samples from CRC patients in northern China by whole-exome sequencing.

Autophagy plays a crucial role in colorectal cancer (CRC) development. Our previous study suggested that serine/threonine protein kinase 25 (STK25) regulates aerobic glycolysis in CRC cells. Glycolysis modulates cellular autophagy during tumor growth; however, the role of STK25 in autophagy remains unclear.

Circular RNA (circRNA) is a non-coding RNA molecule that lacks polyadenylated tails and is highly stable, abundant, and conserved in human cells. CircRNAs can serve as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) to sponge microRNAs (miRNA) and block their effects on target mRNA expression. CircRNAs also have possible relevance to cancer and therefore may be considered as ideal biomarkers for monitoring cancer progression.
