Sample size calculation is an important step for carrying out any research. Most of the sample size estimating utilities/applications use the standard deviation of differences in their formula for paired design, which usually is not reported in the published articles. Researchers are left to use the pooled standard deviation (SDp) instead of using the standard deviation of differences.

Background: To correlate between immunohistochemical expression of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), and natural killer (NK) cells with the AJCC 8th edition TNM staging system and other disease-modifying clinico-pathological variables.

Methods: The representative histology sections of tumor invasive margin (IM) and tumor core (TC) were selected according to the International Immuno-Oncology Biomarker Working Group and were subjected to immunohistochemistry with antibodies for TILs (CD3, CD8, FOXP3), NK Cells (CD57), TAMs (CD68, CD163) and pan-leukocyte marker (CD45). Histo-immuno-density-intensity (HIDI) scoring was calculated as a product of the proportion and intensity of staining.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on how raising intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) during laparoscopic cholecystectomy affects ventilatory mechanical power (MP) and other respiratory parameters.
  • It involved 42 patients and assessed multiple IAP levels and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), finding that increasing IAP led to a significant rise in MP and respiratory driving pressure (DP), while airway resistance (AR) and respiratory compliance (RC) changed inversely.
  • The results suggest that maintaining a specific IAP could help optimize ventilatory support and reduce the risk of lung injury during surgery.

Background Microtubule-associated protein light chains (LC) 3A and 3B are the structural proteins of the autophagosomal membrane widely used as endogenous autophagy markers. LC3A and LC3B autophagosomes reportedly have a distinct subcellular localization yet their role in the transition from premalignant to malignant phase remains unclear. This exploratory study aimed to investigate the expression of autophagy-related proteins LC3A and LC3B in oral premalignant lesions (OPL) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cases.

Complex sclerosing lesion (CSL)/radial scar of breast is a benign entity that can pose a diagnostic challenge due to resemblance to breast carcinoma on imaging. Hamartoma are uncommon benign tumors, composed of disorganized mixture of glandular, fibrous, and adipose tissues, which can exhibit classical imaging characteristics. Here we describe a case of concomitant CSL and hamartoma in left beast, of which CSL presented as suspicious mass on imaging but was ultimately confirmed to be benign on histopathology with 4 years of documented stability.

Background: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is a commonly performed procedure by the bronchoscopist for the evaluation of mediastinal lesions. However, evidence directly comparing the nasal and oral routes to guide the choice of an optimal insertion approach is scanty.

Methods: In this prospective, parallel-group, open-label randomized clinical trial, adults posted for a linear EBUS-TBNA examination under conscious sedation were randomized to undergo the procedure via the nasal or oral route.

Background: There are multiple genes that are co-amplified along with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) in chromosome 17. GRB7 and PGAP3 are two such genes. We hypothesize that the protein products of these genes may serve as immunohistochemistry (IHC) markers for detecting HER2 amplification in breast cancer.

Background: Leukemic cells express a characteristic set of "cluster of differentiation" (CD) markers, which forms the basis of the current WHO classification. Leukemia-associated aberrant immunophenotype (LAIP) refers to expression of unusual CD markers by leukemic cells, which are not normally expressed by their respective lineage. The incidence of LAIP varies considerably, and its clinical implications, prognostic relevance, and sensitivity to therapy are still debatable.

Article Synopsis
  • Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are important for predicting outcomes in solid tumors, but traditional detection methods can be costly and complicated.
  • In a study of 24 patients suspected of having Urinary Bladder Cancer, a new, simpler detection method using filtration technology and routine staining was employed to identify CTCs.
  • The results indicated that the presence of CTCs is significantly linked to tumor invasion and stage, potentially highlighting their value in diagnosing and predicting the prognosis of urinary bladder cancers, although further research with larger samples is needed.

The perception appears to flow in a continuous pattern but evidence suggest that perception may involve discrete temporal sampling of peripheral cues. Stroud's perceptual moment theory proposes that perception occurs in discrete moments; however, more experimental evidence is required to support this theory. The present study characterized the decision function for asynchrony detection using variable stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOAs).
