Purpose: Zinc finger protein 639 (ZNF639) is often found within the overlapping amplicon of , and previous studies suggest its involvement in the pathogenesis of esophageal and oral squamous cell carcinomas. However, its expression and significance in breast cancer remain uncharacterized.

Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis of ZNF639 was performed using tissue microarrays.

Background: Less differentiated thyroid cancer may upregulate the expression of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) and increase glycolytic activity. However, it is uncertain whether GLUT1 can be used as a target for therapy.

Methods: Thyroid cancer cell lines were treated with two different GLUT1 inhibitors, STF-31 and BAY-876.

Article Synopsis
  • * Forty-three patients underwent bowel resection, with serum samples taken at various intervals to measure cytokine levels and clinical data, revealing significant correlations between abdominal wound length, operation time, first flatus passage, and hospital stay.
  • * Results showed that a shorter abdominal wound (less than 7 cm) was associated with quicker recovery times, less postoperative IL-6 increase, and an overall better recovery experience, highlighting the benefits of mini-laparotomy in CRC surgeries.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the interaction between colorectal adenoma risks among asymptomatic individuals in terms of metabolic health status and obesity, and examine the normal waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) in adults with colorectal adenoma risk.

Methods: A cross-sectional, retrospective study was conducted at MacKay Memorial Hospital involving 16,996 participants who underwent bidirectional gastrointestinal endoscopy between 2013 and 2023. The study recorded important clinicopathological characteristics, including age, body mass index and WHR, Framingham Risk Score (FRS), blood glucose level, and () infection status.

Introduction: Although electrocardiographic changes have been previously reported in patients with acute pancreatitis, diffuse ST-segment elevation without occluded coronary arteries is rarely documented.

Patient Concerns: A 45-year-old man presented to our emergency department due to persistent epigastric pain for 2 hours. However, ECG in the emergency department revealed regular sinus rhythm at 67 beats per minute, peaked T waves in lead V3-5, and upsloping ST-segment elevation in leads II, III, aVF, and V2-6.

  • Reprocessing GI endoscopes and accessories is crucial for patient safety, yet current practices fail to ensure complete cleanliness, with about 5.4% of duodenoscopes still contaminated.
  • The Digestive Endoscopy Society of Taiwan (DEST) has developed updated standards for endoscopic reprocessing to enhance quality control in GI endoscopy centers.
  • These guidelines offer detailed, step-by-step instructions and recommendations based on comprehensive reviews of existing practices and clinical effectiveness to improve patient safety.

Objective: Telemedicine can offer services to remote patients regardless of the distance. Fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks may make telemedicine practical because of their low latency. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a novel 5G robot-assisted remote abdominal ultrasound (AUS) telemedicine technology in clinical applications in distant locations.

New and efficacious medical therapies have become available that have greatly enhanced clinicians' ability to manage inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). IBD activity should be assessed regularly in scheduled examinations as the part of a treat-to-target strategy for IBD care. The gold-standard approach to investigating IBD is colonoscopy, but this is an invasive procedure.

A fall is one of the most devastating events that aging people can experience. Fall-related physical injuries, hospital admission, or even mortality among the elderly are all critical health issues. As the population continues to age worldwide, there is an imperative need to develop fall detection systems.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on MMTV-PyVT mice, a genetically engineered model used to understand breast cancer, where the middle T antigen is expressed using the mouse mammary tumor virus promoter.
  • Researchers performed detailed morphologic and genetic analyses on mammary tumors from these mice at various ages, employing histology and sequencing techniques to identify mutations.
  • The findings confirmed MMTV-PyVT mice as a reliable multistage model for studying breast cancer, with specific mutations identified that could guide future research efforts.

The release of chloroform from water to air in an indoor swimming pool (ISP) exhibits complex physicochemical interactions among many variables, including environmental conditions, occupant activities, and geometry of the ISP. By combining the relevant variables, a structured mathematical model, the double-layer air compartment (DLAC) model, was developed to predict the level of chloroform in ISP air. A physical parameter, the indoor airflow recycle ratio (R), was incorporated into the DLAC model due to internal airflow circulation resulting in the ISP structural configuration.

Background/aim: A recent study suggested that solute carrier family 35 member A2 (SLC35A2) is related to poor prognosis in patients with breast cancer. SLC35A2 transports uridine diphosphate-galactose from the cytosol to the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi.

Materials And Methods: Immunohistochemical expression of SLC35A2 was evaluated using tissue microarrays.

Background: This study aims to establish and validate a predictive model based on radiomics features, clinical features, and radiation therapy (RT) dosimetric parameters for overall survival (OS) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients treated with RT for portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT).

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 131 patients. Patients were randomly divided into the training ( = 105) and validation ( = 26) cohorts.

Background and Objective: To assess whether the combination of high waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and elderly age is associated with higher risk of GERD. Material and Methods: A total of 16,996 subjects aged ≥20 years who received esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) between January 2010 and December 2019. We evaluated the risk of GERD in different age groups and WHR groups in unadjusted analysis and multivariate logistic regression models for predictors of GERD.

Animal coronaviruses (CoVs) have been identified to be the origin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)-CoV, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-CoV, and probably SARS-CoV-2 that cause severe to fatal diseases in humans. Variations of zoonotic coronaviruses pose potential threats to global human beings. To overcome this problem, we focused on the main protease (M), which is an evolutionary conserved viral protein among different coronaviruses.

Article Synopsis
  • A study explored the benefits of contrast-enhanced endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy (CE-EUS-FNB) compared to traditional EUS-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) in improving the accuracy of diagnosing malignancies.
  • Involving 133 patients, results showed that while CE-EUS-FNB used fewer needle passes, it did not provide a significant increase in diagnostic accuracy compared to conventional EUS-FNB.
  • The study concluded that while CE-EUS-FNB makes the procedure more efficient by reducing the number of needle insertions, it does not enhance diagnostic yield for experienced endoscopists familiar with traditional techniques.

Diagnosing pancreatic malignancy is challenging, especially in patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP). Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is a promising diagnostic procedure for discriminating between malignancy and CP. We aimed to investigate the predictive factors and reliability of computed tomography (CT) and EUS for differentiating pancreatic mass lesions and the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNA or FNB in patients with CP.

  • Helicobacter pylori infection and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) are linked to a higher risk of colorectal neoplasms, potentially working together to increase this risk even more.
  • A meta-analysis of 27 studies was conducted to assess how prevalent diabetes and H. pylori infections in various populations affect the risk of colorectal adenomas in adults.
  • The findings indicated that as the prevalence of diabetes increased, the risk of developing colorectal adenomas associated with H. pylori infection also rose significantly, underscoring the importance of both factors in colorectal health.
