Anderson-Fabry disease (AFD) is a rare, X-linked, lysosomal storage disorder caused by the absence or deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A activity, leading to the progressive accumulation of sphingolipids in multiple organ systems, including the heart. Cardiac involvement accounts for > 50% of AFD-related mortality and is a primary determinant of disease prognosis. AFD cardiomyopathy is heterogenous with key features that include left ventricular hypertrophy, conduction disturbances, myocardial fibrosis and valvular disease.

The panmictic population concept is at the heart of population, evolutionary and conservation genetics. However, in nature, true panmictic populations are vanishingly rare. As an idea conceived for modelling evolutionary dynamics, it has been thought that the assumption of panmixia was formalised during the development of the Modern Synthesis.

Introduction: Despite the widespread impact of opioid use disorder, pharmacological options for treatment remain limited. Recent studies find that cocaine exposure decreases the expression of the glutamate transporter GLT-1 in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and that treatment with the beta-lactam antibiotic ceftriaxone rescues this loss of expression and reduces cue-induced reinstatement to cocaine self-administration. The novel beta-lactam derivative MC-100093 (093) lacks antimicrobial properties but crosses the blood-brain barrier more rapidly and retains the beneficial effects of ceftriaxone following cocaine.

The North Eurasian forest and forest-steppe zones have sustained millennia of sociocultural connections among northern peoples, but much of their history is poorly understood. In particular, the genomic formation of populations that speak Uralic and Yeniseian languages today is unknown. Here, by generating genome-wide data for 180 ancient individuals spanning this region, we show that the Early-to-Mid-Holocene hunter-gatherers harboured a continuous gradient of ancestry from fully European-related in the Baltic, to fully East Asian-related in the Transbaikal.

Adaptive decision making relies on proper discrimination and prediction of positive and negative events. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) is central to this valence encoding, assigning emotional value to stimuli to drive appropriate behavioral responses. The ventral tegmental area (VTA), which is classically known to regulate associative learning and incentive motivation via dopamine projections to the striatum, also contains strong dopamine projections to the BLA, but this system has received much less attention.

The global aging population presents a major public health challenge, with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remaining the leading cause of death worldwide. Often asymptomatic in early-stages, CVDs are frequently undiagnosed until critical events like myocardial infarction or stroke occur. To address this gap, an advanced integrated multipurpose spectroscopic lab-on-a-chip bionano-device has been developed for early CVD detection through extracellular vesicle (EV).

The North Pontic region, which encompasses present-day Ukraine, was a crossroads of migration, connecting the vast Eurasian Steppe with Central Europe. We generated shotgun-sequenced genomic data for 91 individuals dating from around 7000 BCE to 1800 CE to study migration and mobility history in the region, with a particular focus on historically attested migrating groups during the Iron Age and the medieval period. We infer a high degree of temporal heterogeneity in ancestry, with fluctuating genetic affinities to different present-day Eurasian groups.

Due to Andean bears' propensity for inhabiting challenging environments and terrain, their wild ecology remains poorly understood, especially when compared to other members of the Ursidae family. In one of the steepest, wettest regions of the Andes, the Kosñipata Valley of southeastern Peru, we attached and retrieved camera-borne collars on three wild free-ranging Andean bears. From just one longer term camera collar deployed on a single individual over a period of 4 months, we observed a variety of rare or previously undocumented natural history observations.

During an acute coronary syndrome, atherosclerotic plaque rupture triggers platelet activation and thrombus formation, which may completely occlude a coronary artery leading to ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Although emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is effective in re-opening the main coronary arteries, the downstream microvasculature can become obstructed by embolised plaque material and thrombus. Dual antiplatelet therapy is recommended by guidelines and used routinely for the management of STEMI to reduce the risk of recurrent atherothrombotic events.

Antibiotic resistance, principally a consequence of the human use of antibiotics dispensed in the community, is a relentlessly growing threat to human health in Aotearoa New Zealand. Reducing the prescription of antibiotics for conditions in which they confer no benefit is the most effective method of slowing the spread of antibiotic resistance. In Aotearoa New Zealand, as in many other nations, antibiotic "treatment" of acute respiratory tract infections is the most important component of unnecessary antibiotic use.
