For over 25 years, the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has claimed to observe an annual modulation signal, suggesting the existence of dark matter interactions. However, no experiment using different target materials has observed a dark matter signal consistent with their result. To address this puzzle, the COSINE-100 collaboration conducted a model-independent test using sodium iodide crystal detectors, the same target material as DAMA/LIBRA.

Preoperative sarcopenia in liver transplantation (LT) recipients is an important prognostic factor of LT outcomes. Systemic inflammatory status (SIS) has been proposed as a unifying mechanism for skeletal muscle loss; thus, considering SIS and sarcopenia together may enhance prognosis assessment in patients undergoing LT. Herein, we aimed to describe the relationship between the SIS and skeletal muscle index (SMI) with short-term and long-term mortality post-living donor LT (LDLT).

In liver transplantation (LT), determining the optimal recipients is crucial, and the MELD score has been used for this purpose. However, the MELD score does not reflect functional status, leading to the evaluation of sarcopenia. While the L3 skeletal muscle index (SMI L3 ) is commonly used for assessment, the upper thigh skeletal muscle index (SMI UT ) may better represent functional capacity.

Backgruound: This study aimed to determine the value of 68Ga-DOTATOC positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in localizing adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary adenomas.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we enrolled 30 patients with Cushing's disease and positive ACTH immunoreactivity. All patients underwent 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT and pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before transsphenoidal adenomectomy.

Background: Hippocampal atrophy is implicated in the early onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is closely associated with rapid cognitive decline and serves as a critical predictor for conversion from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD. Consequently, with growing interest in utilizing hippocampal volume (HV) as an outcome measure in clinical trials, elucidating the neurobiological mechanisms underlying hippocampal atrophy is essential for early diagnosing AD and predicting its progression.

Objective: Recently, various mental health promotion programs using virtual reality (VR) technology have been tried in the psychiatric field. Considering the importance of mental health in pregnant women, VR-assisted mental health promotion programs for pregnant women are needed to be developed. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the efficacy of a VR-assisted mental health promotion program for pregnant women.

Article Synopsis
  • Fascioliasis is a disease mainly found in livestock but has seen an increase in human cases in Korea, linked to a green vegetable juice delivery service.
  • Patients diagnosed with fascioliasis often presented with specific symptoms like eosinophilia and were treated with triclabendazole, showing varying recovery patterns in liver abscesses over time.
  • MRI findings indicated that late-diagnosed patients had a higher incidence of bile duct issues, while antibody levels and eosinophil counts significantly declined after treatment, suggesting the need for ongoing monitoring.

A new species of the family Calliopiidae was collected from the East Sea of Korea. is similar to Bousfield & Hendrycks, 1997 in having numerous calceoli on the posteromedial margins of antennae and a weakly carinate body. However, the new species can be distinguished from by the shorter process on peduncular article 3 of antenna 1, subrectangular eyes, and fewer articles in the antenna flagellum.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify and analyze spliceosome components that are expressed differently in growth hormone-secreting pituitary tumors compared to normal tissues.
  • Researchers conducted a transcriptome analysis on tumor samples and normal pituitary tissues, revealing that higher expression levels of the TCERG1 gene were linked to poorer surgical outcomes in patients with acromegaly.
  • Findings suggest that TCERG1 promotes tumor cell growth and invasion, indicating its potential as a biomarker for the aggressiveness of GH-secreting pituitary tumors.

This study aimed to identify hub genes involved in regulatory T cell (Treg) function and migration, offering insights into potential therapeutic targets for cancer immunotherapy. We performed a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis using three gene expression microarray datasets from the GEO database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified to pathway enrichment analysis to explore their functional roles and potential pathways.

Isosaccharinic acid (HISA, or ISA in its deprotonated form) is the main degradation product of cellulose under alkaline conditions. It can form strong complexes with radionuclides and other toxic metal ions, eventually enhancing their mobility in the context of nuclear waste repositories and other environmental systems. Tc is a redox-sensitive, long-lived fission product produced in high yield in nuclear reactors.

This study investigated differential gene expression between granulation patterns in growth hormone (GH)-secreting pituitary tumors, aiming to elucidate novel transcriptomes that explain clinical variances in patients with acromegaly. Transcriptome analysis was conducted on 6 normal pituitary tissues and 15 GH-secreting pituitary tumors, including 9 densely granulated somatotroph tumors (DGSTs) and 6 sparsely granulated somatotroph tumors (SGSTs). We identified 3111 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in tumors compared to normal pituitaries, with 1117 DEGs unique to a specific granulation within tumors.

  • This study examines the effectiveness of self-report questionnaires (MDQ and BSDS) and machine learning techniques in differentiating between bipolar and depressive disorders.
  • Researchers analyzed responses from 189 patients using methods like support vector machine (SVM) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA).
  • Results showed that combining questionnaire data with machine learning significantly improved classification accuracy, indicating a promising approach for better diagnosing these mental health conditions.

Objective: Given the long-term and severe distress experienced during breast cancer treatment, detecting depression among breast cancer patients is clinically crucial. This study aimed to explore a machine-learning model using self-report questionnaires to screen for depression in patients with breast cancer.

Methods: A total of 327 patients who visited the breast cancer clinic were included in this study.

Schizophrenia (SPR) is the most devastating mental illness that causes severe deterioration in social and occupational functioning, but, the etiology remains unknown. The objective of this study is to explore the genetic underpinnings of novelty seeking behavior in schizophrenic family within the Korean population. By conducting a family-based genome-wide association study, we aim to identify potential genetic markers and variations associated with novelty seeking traits in the context of SPR.

  • The study investigates how effective the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is for screening depression in breast cancer patients, highlighting the need for a quick assessment tool due to common depressive symptoms in this group.
  • A total of 327 breast cancer patients were evaluated, with the PHQ-9 showing good reliability (Cronbach's α between 0.800 and 0.879) and valid correlation with established scales like the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS).
  • The research concludes that the PHQ-9 is a suitable and convenient tool for assessing depression in breast cancer clinics, suggesting it could enhance clinical practices for managing mental health in these

B lymphocytes play a pivotal role in the adaptive immune system by facilitating antibody production. Young B cell progenitors originate in the bone marrow and migrate to the spleen for antigen-dependent maturation, leading to the development of diverse B cell subtypes. Thus, tracking B cell trajectories through cell type distinction is essential for an appropriate checkpoint assessment.
