The risks of LP delay or deferral are potentially greater in high-HIV prevalence, resource-limited settings; we analyzed data from such a setting to determine the impact of CT on time to LP and treatment, as well as mortality.
Methods: Adults with suspected central nervous system (CNS) infection were enrolled prospectively into the Botswana National Meningitis Survey between 2016 and 2019.
Background: Macrolide antibiotics, including azithromycin, can reduce under 5 years of age mortality rates and treat various infections in children in sub-Saharan Africa. These exposures, however, can select for antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the gut microbiota.
Methods: Our previous randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a rapid-test-and-treat strategy for severe acute diarrheal disease in children in Botswana included an intervention (3-day azithromycin dose) group and a control group that received supportive treatment.
Objectives: We compared the patterns of HIV-1 drug resistance mutations between the CSF and plasma of individuals with HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of archived CSF and plasma samples collected from ART-exposed participants recruited in the Phase 3 AmBisome Therapy Induction Optimisation randomized controlled trial (ISRCTN72509687) conducted in Botswana between 2018 and 2021. HIV-1 RT and protease genes were genotyped using next-generation sequencing and HIV-1 drug resistance mutations were compared between the CSF and plasma compartments stratified by thresholds of ≥20% and <20%.

Introduction: The study aim was to determine if rapid enteric diagnostics followed by the provision of targeted antibiotic therapy ('test-and-treat') and/or DSM 17938 would improve outcomes in children hospitalised in Botswana with acute gastroenteritis.
Methods: This was a multicentre, randomised, factorial, controlled, trial. Children aged 2-60 months admitted for acute non-bloody diarrhoea to four hospitals in southern Botswana were eligible.
Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines reduce the burden of invasive pneumococcal disease, but the sustained effect of these vaccines can be diminished by an increase in disease caused by non-vaccine serotypes. To describe pneumococcal serotype epidemiology in Botswana following introduction of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-13) in July 2012, we performed molecular serotyping of 268 pneumococcal strains isolated from 221 children between 2012 and 2017. Diagnosing diarrheal disease is difficult in part due to challenges in obtaining and transporting a bulk stool specimen, particularly in resource-limited settings. We compared the performance of flocked rectal swabs to that of traditional bulk stool samples for enteric pathogen detection using the BioFire FilmArray gastrointestinal panel in children admitted to four hospitals in Botswana with community onset severe gastroenteritis. Of the 117-matched flocked rectal swab/stool pairs, we found no significant difference in pathogen detection rates between the flocked rectal swab samples and traditional bulk stool sampling methods for any bacterial (168 versus 167, respectively), viral (94 versus 92, respectively), or protozoan (18 versus 18, respectively) targets.

We compared the performance of flocked and matched traditional rectal swabs collected from 236 children admitted with gastroenteritis in Botswana. All samples were tested using real time multiplex-PCR assays for nine enteric pathogens. There was a 20% higher detection of Shigella from flocked swabs, but most other pathogens had similar detection rates.
