Altermagnets are a class of magnetic materials that exhibit unconventional transport properties, such as an anomalous Hall effect (AHE), despite having compensated sublattice magnetic moments. In this study, fundamental experimental evidence of the altermagnetic nature of hematite (α-FeO), is reported combining electrical transport with advanced X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM) imaging with linear and circular dichroism contrast. These measurements directly visualize the Néel vector's coupling to the crystal orientation, confirming hematite's altermagnetic order and its symmetry-driven transport behavior.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in cases with syphilis and HIV coinfection. Concordant infection with HIV can alter the clinical course and response to treatment in syphilis. Variable and unusual presentations of syphilis in HIV disease can make early diagnosis and treatment challenging.

Background And Aim: Overt obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OOGIB) is defined as continued bleeding with unknown source despite esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy evaluation. Small bowel evaluation through video capsule endoscopy (VCE) or double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) is often warranted. We studied the timing of DBE in hospitalized OOGIB patients regarding diagnostic yield, therapeutic yield, and GI rebleeding.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) in assessing gastric content in patients prior to upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy.
  • The researchers scanned patients' gastric antrum to measure cross-sectional area and assess if the contents were safe or unsafe, correlating these findings with actual gastric fluid aspirated during the procedure.
  • Results indicated that while POCUS accurately identified unsafe contents in a small percentage of patients, the correlation between ultrasound measurements and estimated gastric volumes was moderate, suggesting that qualitative assessments can help identify at-risk patients before anesthesia.

Colonic lipomas (CLs) are a rare benign neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract and the second most common tumor of the colon after adenomatous polyps. The clinical presentation of lipomas depends on the size of the tumor. Lesions that are less than 2 cm are mostly asymptomatic and are incidental findings during procedures like colonoscopies, imaging, or surgery.

BACKGROUND Lurbinectedin (Lurbi) was first approved in June 2020 for metastatic small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients with progression following platinum-based chemotherapy. Extrapulmonary small cell neuroendocrine cancers (SCNECs) are treated with regimens used for SCLCs. Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) in solid SCLCs and SCNECs following Lurbi use has not been reported in the literature so far.

Background: There is paucity of head-to-head studies comparing the effectiveness of ustekinumab (UST) and adalimumab (ADA) in Crohn's disease (CD). Here we provide a real-world comparison of these two agents.

Methods: We conducted an ambidirectional cohort study.

Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is uniformly recurrent after liver transplant (LT) and recurrence is associated with an increased risk of mortality. Immunosuppressive medications increase the risk of chronic kidney disease, and the presence of chronic kidney disease presents a challenge for HCV treatment in LT recipients. The aim of this study was to assess changes in glomerular filtration rates (GFRs) of LT recipients receiving HCV treatment.

Background And Aims: The aims of this study were to examine changes in the proportion of decompensated hepatitis C virus (HCV) cirrhosis patients with ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, and variceal bleeding at pretreatment compared to 3 and 12 months post-sustained virological response (SVR) and to compare pretreatment and post-SVR model of end-stage liver disease and Child-Pugh scores and alpha-fetoprotein levels.

Methods: Electronic medical records of 64 decompensated HCV cirrhosis patients who received direct-acting antivirals were reviewed. The McNemar-Bowker test and the Wilcoxon-Signed Rank test were used to compare patient outcomes.

Aim:  The objectives of this study are to examine clinical characteristics of patients undergoing anterograde and retrograde double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) and to assess factors predicting positive diagnostic yield, therapeutic yield, and readmission.

Methods:  We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients (n = 420) who underwent DBE at a tertiary care center between 2012 and 2016 at a tertiary referral center. Measures of central tendency and frequency distributions were used for univariate analysis.

Background: Vedolizumab (VDZ), an adhesion molecule inhibitor and infliximab (IFX), a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker, are both approved as first-line induction agents in moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC). However, there are no head-to-head studies comparing the relative effectiveness of the two agents. Here we provide a real-world comparison of these two agents.

Objective: Direct acting antivirals (DAAs) have overcome many long-standing medical barriers to hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment (i.e. host characteristics and medical contraindications) and treatment outcome disparities that were associated with interferon regimens.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is linked to porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT), and while treatment has improved with direct-acting antivirals (DAA), data on HCV treatment in PCT patients is still scarce.* -
  • A retrospective study reviewed 22 HCV treatment attempts in 13 PCT patients, revealing some relapses during interferon-based therapies, while 12 patients achieved sustained viral response with DAA.* -
  • The study suggests that interferon and ribavirin may trigger PCT relapses, while hydroxychloroquine could help prevent them; further research is needed to explore DAA's role in treating PCT in HCV-infected patients.*

Aim: To study the association between vitamin D level and hospitalization rate in Crohn's disease (CD) patients.

Methods: We designed a retrospective cohort study using adult patients (> 19 years) with CD followed for at least one year at our inflammatory bowel disease center. Vitamin D levels were divided into: low mean vitamin D level (< 30 ng/mL) appropriate mean vitamin D level (30-100 ng/mL).

Background/aim: Recurrent hepatitis C virus infection is a challenging complication post-liver transplant. Current guidelines recommend the combination of ribavirin and ledipasvir/sofosbuvir for 12 weeks for the treatment of recurrent HCV genotype 1 post-liver transplant. Data are limited on the use of ledipasvir/sofosbuvir without ribavirin.

Background: Budesonide is generally not used for periods > 90 days in Crohn's disease (CD). We sought to study the association between cumulative outpatient budesonide use in days and hospitalization rate in CD patients seen at our institution.

Methods: Using a retrospective cohort study design, we selected CD patients > 19 years old and followed for at least 1 year.

Teleradiology allows transmission of medical images for clinical data interpretation to provide improved e-health care access, delivery, and standards. The remote transmission raises various ethical and legal issues like image retention, fraud, privacy, malpractice liability, etc. A joint FED watermarking system means a joint fingerprint/encryption/dual watermarking system is proposed for addressing these issues.

A supernumerary tooth is that which is present additionally to the normal series and can be found in any region of the dental arch. An impacted tooth is defined as the one which is embedded in the alveolus, so that its eruption is prevented, or the tooth is locked in position by bone or the adjacent teeth. The occurrence of multiple supernumerary teeth in only one patient in the absence of an associated systemic condition or syndrome is considered as a rare phenomenon.
