Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections occur in 10%-40% of organ or stem cell transplant patients. Despite the low prevalence, CMV antiviral resistance has an important impact on patient outcomes. Guidelines for transplant recipients recommend that resistance should be suspected in cases of unchanged or increasing CMV viral loads after a minimum of 2 weeks of antiviral therapy at an appropriate dose or >6 weeks of ganciclovir exposure.

In the context of increasing parvovirus B19 (B19V) infections, we describe a case of B19V encephalomyelitis without any usually associated clinical features. Etiology was identified by metagenomics and confirmed by PCR and whole-genome sequencing. This case highlights the need to consider the diagnosis of B19V infection in patients presenting with neurological symptoms.

Here we report that genes for cytochrome b5 occur broadly among viruses in the class Megaviricetes isolated from the deep ocean, freshwater and terrestrial sources, and human patients. Transcriptional analysis showed that Mimivirus bradfordmassiliense cytochrome b5 is expressed in the host and has characteristic spectral properties.

Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) rarely causes severe disease, even in solid organ transplant recipients. This paper describes a fatal case of HSV-2 infection, probably transmitted from a donor to a kidney transplant recipient. The donor was seropositive for HSV-2 but not for HSV-1, whereas the recipient was seronegative for both viruses before transplantation, suggesting that the graft was the source of infection.

We evaluated the frequency of positivity for the causative agent, monkeypox virus (MPXV), in blood donations collected in August 2022, during the outbreak period in Southern England.
Methods/materials: The sensitivity and specificity of an MPXV-specific PCR and a generic non-variola orthopoxvirus (NVO) PCR were evaluated using samples from mpox cases and synthetic DNA standards.
Real-time PCR plays a key role in the diagnosis of viral infections. Multiple kits can detect or quantify genomes of various viruses with the same thermocycling program. Detection of RNA viruses includes an additional step of reverse transcription and challenge their detection in a single run with DNA viruses.
