: The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was updated in 2022 to refine patient stratification, particularly in patients with intermediate-stage (BCLC B) HCC. Although transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) remains a key treatment for these patients, there is no prognostic model for survival outcomes based on the pretreatment factors of patients who meet the updated 2022 BCLC indications for TACE. The aim of this study was to develop a pretreatment risk model predicting overall survival (OS) in patients with intermediate-stage HCC and reclassified as candidates for TACE according to the updated 2022 BCLC criteria.

Article Synopsis
  • Antarctic icefishes lack hemoglobin genes and have adapted to low temperatures with features like larger hearts, increased blood volume, and lower hematocrit to improve oxygen transport.
  • A genomic comparison revealed the loss of the FAAP20 gene, linked to anemia, and remnants of this gene in several icefish species, while another gene, SOAT1, related to cholesterol metabolism, was also lost.
  • The absence of FAAP20 may help explain the unique low hematocrit levels in icefishes, shedding light on their oxygen supply adaptations.

High-fidelity patterning of thin metal films on arbitrary soft substrates promises integrated circuits and devices that can significantly augment the morphological functionalities of freeform electronics. However, existing patterning methods that decisively rely on prefabricated rigid masks are severely incompatible with myriad surfaces. Here, we report printable, stretchable metal-vapor-desorption layers (s-MVDLs) that can enable high-fidelity patterning of thin metal films on freeform polymeric surfaces.

Marine organisms' lipid metabolism contributes to marine ecosystems by producing a variety of lipid molecules. Historically, research focused on the lipid metabolism of the organisms themselves. Recent microbiome studies, however, have revealed that gut microbial communities influence the amount and type of lipids absorbed by organisms, thereby altering the organism's lipid metabolism.

Scope: This study investigates the impact of extracts derived from Antarctic fish species, Trematomus newnesi and Trematomus bernacchii, on the migration of human placental trophoblast JEG-3 cells, which is a crucial aspect of successful pregnancy.

Methods And Results: The extracts, obtained from the muscles of these fish, significantly enhance the migration and invasion of JEG-3 cells in in vitro wound healing, Transwell, and collagen invasion assays. These effects are accompanied by an increase in matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 9 activity, as demonstrated by zymography.

Here, we investigate the effects of acute and chronic exposure to arsenate (AsV) and arsenite (AsIII) in the marine medaka Oryzias melastigma. In vivo effects, biotransformation, and oxidative stress were studied in marine medaka exposed to the two inorganic arsenics for 4 or 28 days. An investigation of embryonic development revealed no effect on in vivo parameters, but the hatching rate increased in the group exposed to AsIII.

To elucidate the key parameters governing the emission properties of phenylimidazole (pim)-based Ir(III) emitters, including their electronic structure and the bulky aryl substitution effect, a series of pim-based iridium(III) complexes (, = 1-R-2-(X-phenyl)-1-imidazole) bearing secondary pendants of increasing bulkiness [R = methyl (Me), phenyl (Ph), terphenyl (TPh), or 4-isopropyl terphenyl (ITPh)] and three different primary pim ligands (X = F, F, and CN) were designed and synthesized. Based on photophysical and electrochemical analyses, it was found that the excited state properties are highly dependent on the bulkiness of the secondary substituent and the inductive nature of the primary pim ligand. The incorporation of bulky TPh/ITPh substituents in the second coordination sphere significantly enhanced the emission efficiencies in the solid state (Φ = 72.

Article Synopsis
  • * Marbled rockcod had higher total omega-3 fatty acids, with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found mainly in the skin and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrated in the brain; mackerel icefish showed unique distribution patterns with high levels of both omega-3s in the stomach and skin.
  • * Additionally, extracts from the skin and liver of mackerel icefish effectively inhibited matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP

To explore the excited-state electronic structure of the blue-emitting Ir(dmp) dopant material (dmp = 3-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-7-methylimidazo[1,2-]phenanthridine), which is notable for durable blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diode (PhOLED), a series of homoleptic dmp-based Ir(III) complexes (, tris[3-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-7--imidazo[1,2-]phenanthridin-12-yl-κ ,κ ]iridium, = H, CH, F, and CF) were prepared by introducing an electron-donating group (EDG; -CH) or an electron-withdrawing group (EWG; -F and -CF) at the 7-position of the imidazo-phenanthridine ligand. The photophysical analysis demonstrated that the alteration from EDG to EWGs led to redshifted structureless emission profiles, which were correlated with variations in the MLCT/ILCT ratio in the T excited state. From electrochemical studies and density functional theory calculations, it turned out that the excited-state nature of the dmp-based Ir(III) complexes was significantly affected by the inductive effect of the 7-substituent of the cyclometalating dmp ligand.
