Simultaneous determination of methamphetamine, MDMA, and ketamine and their metabolites in urine using a rapid and simple HS-SPME-GC-MS method: A forensic study on drug abuse patterns in South Korea.

The increasing abuse of stimulants such as methamphetamine (MA) and 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA), along with the dissociative anesthetic ketamine (KET), poses a significant challenge in forensic toxicology in South Korea. To improve forensic toxicology analysis of polydrug use, a rapid and reliable method was developed for the simultaneous detection of MA, MDMA, KET, and their metabolites in urine using headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The method was optimized to enhance extraction efficiency while minimizing carry-over.

Diversity of public attitudes regarding the impact of wind energy facilities on landscapes: A photo Q-methodology approach.

The global expansion of wind energy facilities is essential to address the climate crisis; however, it raises significant concerns regarding their impact on landscapes. Understanding public attitudes toward such changes is critical for the effective planning and deployment of these facilities. This study employs photo-based Q methodology combined with one-on-one interviews to explore diverse public perceptions of wind energy facilities across various landscape settings.

Age-related off-label drug prescribing in pediatric patients in South Korea and consistency of labeling compared to the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Insufficient labeling information regarding the appropriate age for prescribing drugs to the pediatric population is challenging. This study aimed to analyze the off-label prescription of age-related drugs for pediatric patients using claims data from South Korea and to assess the consistency of the approved age in South Korea, the United States, Europe, and Japan. In 2020, 1004 unique drugs were prescribed to the pediatric population in South Korea.

Complexity of SMAX1 signaling during seedling establishment.

Karrikins (KARs) are small butenolide compounds identified in the smoke of burning vegetation. Along with the stimulating effects on seed germination, KARs also regulate seedling vigor and adaptive behaviors, such as seedling morphogenesis, root hair development, and stress acclimation. The pivotal KAR signaling repressor, SUPPRESSOR OF MAX2 1 (SMAX1), plays central roles in these developmental and morphogenic processes through an extensive signaling network that governs seedling responses to endogenous and environmental cues.

Changes in the Review Period of Drug Application and a Drug Lag from the FDA and the EMA: An Industry Survey in South Korea Between 2011 and 2020.

Background: The Korean regulatory authority has enacted legislation to expedite the new drug approval (NDA) process. However, the effectiveness of such efforts in reducing review time and drug approval delays between Korea and the USA/EU remains to be evaluated.

Methods: We investigated NDA trends in Korea from 2011 to 2020 using approval information from pharmaceutical companies.

Identification of a novel bromoindazole synthetic cannabinoid analogue in seized e-cigarette liquid: ADB-BRINACA.

A wide variety of new synthetic cannabinoids have emerged around the world in recent years, and because of this rapid emergence, the detection and monitoring of this class of abused drugs remain a challenge. In this study, a new cannabimimetic indazole-3-carboxamide derivative, N-(1-amino-3,3-dimethyl-1-oxobutan-2-yl)- 5-bromo-1 H-indazole-3-carboxamide, was identified from seized e-cigarette liquid samples and newly named as ADB-BRINACA by referring to the names of other known indazole-class synthetic cannabinoids. Structure identification was accomplished based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), high-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-QTOF-MS/MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR).

Designing a public engagement process for long-term urban park development project.

Gathering public consensus about long-term urban open space development is more difficult than ever, even though public engagement is crucial for sustainable long-term policymaking. Routine evaluation of public awareness is important for retaining project momentum and designing appropriate public engagement processes for the future. This study focuses on the Yongsan Park Development Project, which has been in progress for more than three decades.

Prospective pharmacological methodology for establishing and evaluating anti-cancer drug resistant cell lines.

Background: Cell lines are often used to assess the resistance of anticancer drugs when in vivo analysis is not possible. However, the process for establishing anti-cancer drug resistance in cell cultures in vitro and the subsequent method of then evaluating resistance are not clearly established. Traditionally, the IC is the most commonly used indicator of resistance evaluation but it cannot represent the effectiveness of anti-cancer drugs in a clinical setting and lacks reliability because it is heavily affected by the cell doubling time.

Detection of l-Methamphetamine and l-Amphetamine as Selegiline Metabolites.

Selegiline (SE) is a selective, irreversible monoamine oxidase-B inhibitor, used for reducing symptoms in early-stage Parkinson's disease. The metabolites of SE include l-methamphetamine, l-amphetamine and desmethylselegiline (DSE). The stereoisomers of SE metabolites, d-methamphetamine and d-amphetamine are highly addictive psychostimulants and some of the most abused drugs in South Korea.

Phenolic components rich ethyl acetate fraction of Orostachys japonicus inhibits lipid accumulation by regulating reactive oxygen species generation in adipogenesis.

In this study, Orostachys japonicus was extracted with ethyl alcohol and fractionated by a serial of organic solvents. The ethyl acetate fraction was found to be the most effective among the tested five fractions. High-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis of the ethyl acetate fraction presented epicatechin gallate, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, and kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside.

var. iwarenge was extracted with water, 30 and 70% ethyl alcohol. The ethyl alcohol extracts showed higher total phenol contents and greater antioxidant effects than the water extract.

Simultaneous determination of methylphenidate and ritalinic acid in hair using LC-MS/MS.

Methylphenidate (MPH) is one of the most commonly prescribed stimulants for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and its abuse is on the rise with its growing availability. Some analytical methods have been reported for the detection of MPH in hair. However, the concentration range of MPH as well as its metabolite, ritalinic acid (RA) in the hair of MPH abuse cases has not been reported.

Simultaneous determination of 18 psychoactive agents and 6 metabolites in plasma using LC-MS/MS and application to actual plasma samples from conscription candidates.

In Korea, an increasing number of people attempt to evade military conscription by posing as mental health patients. To verify the authenticity of mental illness, there is a need to detect wide range of psychoactive agents in biological specimens of conscription candidates. In this study, we developed and validated a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for simultaneous determination of 18 psychoactive agents and 6 metabolites in human plasma.

The Termination Level of the Dural Sac Relevant to Caudal Epidural Block in Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebrae: A Comparison between Sacralization and Lumbarization Groups.

Background: Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) are a relatively common variant and have been considered as one of the reasons for back pain. It is not unusual for clinicians to encounter patients with LSTV who require caudal epidural block (CEB) for pain management.

Objective: We investigated the termination level of the dural sac (DS) and anatomical features of the lumbosacral region relevant to CEB in patients with LSTV and compared these findings between sacralization and lumbarization groups.

Purpose To evaluate MRI-pathology concordance of tumor size in patients with invasive breast carcinoma. Material and Methods Data from 307 invasive breast carcinomas were analyzed retrospectively.

Although several studies have conducted maternal transfer of individual PBDE congener in experimental animals, there is a paucity of research on differences in maternal transfer of PBDE congeners. The purpose of the study was to investigate and compare placental and lactational transfer of BDE 47, -209 and its metabolites in rat dam-offspring pairs following repeated administration of BDE 47 and -209. C-BDE 47, BDE 209 and its debrominated congeners were detected both in dam serum and offspring body, which indicates that PBDEs can be maternally transferred.

Role of 14-3-3 sigma in over-expression of P-gp by rifampin and paclitaxel stimulation through interaction with PXR.

In this study, we presented the role of 14-3-3σ to activate CK2-Hsp90β-PXR-MDR1 pathway on rifampin and paclitaxel treated LS174T cells and in vivo LS174T cell-xenografted nude mouse model. Following several in vitro and in vivo experiments, rifampin and paclitaxel were found to be stimulated the CK2-Hsp90β-PXR-MDR1 pathway. Of the proteins in this pathway, Pregnane X receptor (PXR) is a representative transcription factor of multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1).

Morphologic Evaluation of Ductus Diverticulum Using Multi - Detector Computed Tomography: Comparison with Traumatic Pseudoaneurysm of the Aortic Isthmus.

Objectives: To evaluate morphologic variations at the aortic isthmus with particular attention to ductus diverticulum, a mimicker of traumatic pseudoaneurysm, and to describe differences using Computed Tomography (CT) images.

Patients And Methods: From December 2013 to December 2014, patients who underwent a chest CT examination after blunt trauma at our emergency department were included. Aortic isthmus morphologies were evaluated using multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) and maximum intensity projection (MIP) images as follows.

Paratracheal air cysts are uncommon findings in the pediatric population.

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of paratracheal air cysts (PACs) in the pediatric population.

Methods: The chest CT images of pediatric patients between July 2007 and December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed for the presence and imaging findings of PACs. In addition, the association between PACs and the presence of bronchiectasis and air cystic pulmonary lesions were evaluated.

Detection of drugs in 275 alcohol-positive blood samples of Korean drivers.

Since driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) is as dangerous as drink-driving, many countries regulate DUID by law. However, laws against the use of drugs while driving are not yet established in Korea. In order to investigate the type and frequency of drugs used by drivers in Korea, we analyzed controlled and non-controlled drugs in alcohol-positive blood samples.

Estimation of the synthetic routes of seized methamphetamines using GC-MS and multivariate analysis.

One hundred and twenty six seized methamphetamine (MA) samples were analyzed using GC-MS. All the peaks that appeared in the chromatograms were investigated and 61 impurities including n-octacosane (internal standard) were identified. Among them, 37 impurities were already known or newly identified by comparing with commercial library entries and 18 impurities were detected for the first time.
