We present a microfluidic strategy for fabricating high-concentration alginate microgels through a combination of shell-mediated gelation and osmotic shrinkage. Using a water-in-oil-in-water double emulsion platform, we introduce a thermally responsive oil shell that undergoes a phase transition upon cooling. This phase change allows spatial control over calcium ion diffusion into the alginate core by forming transient diffusion channels, resulting in localized and uniform ionic crosslinking.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, and appropriate management of blood pressure (BP) is crucial for both prevention and treatment. Since the 2009 publication of the Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) by the Korean Stroke Society (KSS), significant advances have been made in BP management for stroke patients, particularly in cases involving intracerebral hemorrhage and in the context of endovascular reperfusion therapy for ischemic stroke. In light of recent evidence, the CPG Committee of the KSS initiated an update of the guidelines for BP management in acute stroke.

Oral delivery of hydrophobic compounds remains challenging due to their poor aqueous solubility and the potential toxicity associated with conventional surfactant-based emulsions. To address these issues, we present a surfactant-free encapsulation strategy using electrosprayed alginate hydrogel beads for the stable and controlled delivery of hydrophobic oils. Hydrophobic compounds were dispersed in high-viscosity alginate solutions without surfactants via ultrasonication, forming kinetically stable oil-in-water dispersions.

We develop color-encoded multicompartmental hydrogel (MH) microspheres tailored for multiplexed bioassays using a drop-based microfluidic approach. Our method involves the creation of triple emulsion drops that feature thin sacrificial oil layers separating two prepolymer phases. Here, we report PNIPAm-co-PEGDA hydrogel shelled microcapsules with a thin oil layer to achieve tunable thermo-responsive release of the encapsulated small hydrophilic actives. We use a microfluidic device integrated with a temperature-controlled chamber for consistent and reliable production of the microcapsules by utilizing triple emulsion drops (W/O/W/O) with a thin oil layer as capsule templates. The interstitial oil layer between the aqueous core and the PNIPAm-co-PEGDA shell provides a diffusion barrier for the encapsulated active until the temperature reaches a critical point above which the destabilization of interstitial oil layer occurs.
