Association of Decreased Bone Density and Hyperlipidemia in a Taiwanese Older Adult Population.

Objective: This study aimed to determine if a combination of 2 abnormal lipid profiles revealed a stronger association with low bone mass than a single blood lipid abnormality alone.

Methods: This study enrolled 1373 participants who had received a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scan from January 2016 to December 2016 in a medical center in southern Taiwan. Logistic regression was used to examine association between lipid profiles and osteopenia or osteoporosis after adjusting for covariates.

Incidences, risk factors, and clinical correlates of severe QT prolongation after the use of quetiapine or haloperidol.

Background: Case reports suggest that quetiapine or haloperidol use is associated with severe QT prolongation (SQTP) and torsades de pointes.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the incidences, risk factors, and outcomes of SQTP in quetiapine and haloperidol users.

Methods: This study accessed electronic medical records from a multicenter health-care hospital system in Taiwan and included patients who received quetiapine or haloperidol therapy and had both baseline and follow-up electrocardiograms.

Leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor type B (LILRB) is an immunomodulatory receptor originally found to be expressed in myeloid cells. In this study, we found that LILRB receptors can be induced under inflammatory stimuli and chemotherapy treatment conditions.

Curcumin-mediated photodynamic treatment extends the shelf life of salmon (Salmo salar) sashimi during chilled storage: Comparisons of preservation effects with five natural preservatives.

The impact of curcumin-mediated photodynamic treatment (PDT) on the microbiological, physicochemical and sensory qualities of salmon sashimi has not been explored. Herein, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of PDT on the shelf-life quality of ready-to-eat salmon fillets during chilled storage (4 °C) in comparison with five widely investigated natural extracts, including cinnamic aldehyde, rosmarinic acid, chlorogenic acid, dihydromyricetin and nisin. From a microbial perspective, PDT exhibited outstanding bacterial inhibition, the results of total viable counts, total coliform bacteria, psychrotrophic bacteria, Pseudomonas spp.

Acoustic radiation force impulse predicts long-term outcomes in a large-scale cohort: High liver cancer, low comorbidity in hepatitis B virus.

Background: Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) is used to measure liver fibrosis and predict outcomes. The performance of elastography in assessment of fibrosis is poorer in hepatitis B virus (HBV) than in other etiologies of chronic liver disease.

Aim: To evaluate the performance of ARFI in long-term outcome prediction among different etiologies of chronic liver disease.

Integrative taxonomy revealing a troglobitic new genus of Diplommatinidae from Jiangxi, China (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda: Cyclophoroidea).

A new subterranean diplommatinid snail is described and illustrated from Jiangxi, China. The species is diagnosed by its cylindrical-fusiform shell and absence of internal columellar lamellae and parietal folds. The morphological and molecular phylogenetic characterization of the new species supports the erection of a new genus, Sohtsuia Z.

The millipedes (Diplopoda) in Yintiaoling National Natural Reserve, Southwest China.

The millipedes of Yintiaoling National Natural Reserve, Southwest China, were investigated. In total, thirteen species from five orders (Sphaerotheriida, Spirobolida, Callipodida, Chordeumatida and Polydesmida) and eight families were discovered. Among them, six species are new to science: Zephronia linkouzi sp.

Pharmacological and mechanistic study of PS1, a Pdia4 inhibitor, in β-cell pathogenesis and diabetes in db/db mice.

Pdia4 has been characterized as a key protein that positively regulates β-cell failure and diabetes via ROS regulation. Here, we investigated the function and mechanism of PS1, a Pdia4 inhibitor, in β-cells and diabetes. We found that PS1 had an IC of 4 μM for Pdia4.

Reference intervals for thyroid hormone, sex hormone, and clinical biochemical tests in cord blood from Taiwanese newborn - TMICS cohort.

Background/purpose: This study aims to establish reference intervals for important biochemical parameters in cord blood of newborn male and female infants in Taiwan and to investigate their sex difference. We also examined the correlation of the same markers between maternal blood levels and neonatal cord blood levels.

Methods: 2,136 pregnant women receiving regular routine prenatal health assessments in their third trimester (weeks 29-40) were recruited from nine hospitals in Taiwan between 2012 and 2015.

Statin Use and Delirium Risk: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Findings on the association of statin use with delirium risk are inconsistent.

The Study Question: Is statin use associated with delirium risk?

Study Design: We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and the EMBASE database, limiting the search to human patients and articles in English published until December 31, 2021. The effect size and 95% confidence interval (CI) were defined as the odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI, respectively, to indicate the difference in the incidence of delirium between statin use and nonuse groups.

Early administration of ivabradine in patients admitted for acute decompensated heart failure.

Background: Heart rate (HR) control is important in heart failure (HF) patients with reduced ejection fraction, and ivabradine is indicated for patients with chronic HF and sinus rhythm. However, ivabradine is limited in initiation of ivabradine at acute stage of HF.

Materials And Methods: This multi-institutional retrospective study enrolled 30,639 patients who were admitted for HF from January 01, 2013 to December 31, 2018 at Chang Gung Memorial Hospitals.

Prolonged peripheral seronegative spondyloarthritis following BioNTech coronavirus disease 2019 vaccination: A case report.

A female 17-year-old diagnosed with seronegative spondyloarthritis (SpA) following the first jab of the BioNTech162b2 (BNT162b2) vaccine presented with recurrent swelling and painful knee accompanied by posterior heel tenderness over the past 1.5 months. Laboratory investigations revealed elevated serum erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein.

Research Progress for RNA Modifications in Physiological and Pathological Angiogenesis.

As a critical layer of epigenetics, RNA modifications demonstrate various molecular functions and participate in numerous biological processes. RNA modifications have been shown to be essential for embryogenesis and stem cell fate. As high-throughput sequencing and antibody technologies advanced by leaps and bounds, the association of RNA modifications with multiple human diseases sparked research enthusiasm; in addition, aberrant RNA modification leads to tumor angiogenesis by regulating angiogenesis-related factors.

Anticoagulant drugs with or without proton pump inhibitor and colorectal cancer risk: a population-based, case-control study.

Background: Low-dose aspirin and clopidogrel have demonstrated potential chemoprevention for colorectal cancer (CRC). Proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) are commonly prescribed with anticoagulation drugs, but the relationship between PPI and CRC is unclear. Moreover, evidence of CRC risk under direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) is limited.

Relationship of maternal body weight and gestational diabetes mellitus with large-for-gestational-age babies at birth in Taiwan: The TMICS cohort.

Objective: To determine if both gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and maternal overweight/obesity are independently associated with delivery of large-for-gestational-age (LGA) babies in Taiwan.

Materials And Methods: Anthropometric parameters were measured and 75-g oral glucose-tolerance tests were administered to a cohort of 1428 pregnant women at 24-28 weeks gestation at nine hospitals in Taiwan. GDM was diagnosed based on the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups criteria.

Associations between dietary patterns and stages of chronic kidney disease.

Background: Studies have revealed that patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have dietary patterns different from those of the general population. However, no studies have compared the dietary patterns of between patients with early-stages (stages 1-3a) and late-stages (stages 3b-5) of CKD. Our objective was to investigate the associations between dietary patterns in early and late-stage CKD.

Current Advancements of Plant-Derived Agents for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Therapy through Deregulating Cancer Cell Functions and Reprogramming Tumor Microenvironment.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is defined based on the absence of estrogen, progesterone, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 receptors. Currently, chemotherapy is the major therapeutic approach for TNBC patients; however, poor prognosis after a standard chemotherapy regimen is still commonplace due to drug resistance. Abnormal tumor metabolism and infiltrated immune or stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) may orchestrate mammary tumor growth and metastasis or give rise to new subsets of cancer cells resistant to drug treatment.

Uric Acid as a Predictor for Early Allograft Dysfunction after Living Donor Liver Transplantation: A Prospective Observational Study.

Early allograft dysfunction (EAD) is a postoperative complication that may cause graft failure and mortality after liver transplantation. The objective of this study was to examine whether the preoperative serum uric acid (SUA) level may predict EAD. We performed a prospective observational study, including 61 donor/recipient pairs who underwent living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).

Nutrient supplements from selected botanicals mediated immune modulation of the tumor microenvironment and antitumor mechanism.

Specific extracts of selected vegetables (SV) have been shown to benefit the survival of stage IIIb/IV non-small cell lung cancer patients in phase I/II studies and is currently in a phase III trial. However, the underlying mechanism of SV-mediated antitumor immune responses has not been elucidated. Our results indicate that SV modulated the NK and adoptive T cell immune responses in antitumor efficacy.

Description of Hypocambala zizhongi sp. nov. and the new combination, Glyphiulus polytrichus (Golovatch et al., 2011) comb. nov., based on morphological and molecular data (Spirostreptida: Cambalidea: Cambalopsidae).

The recent delimitation of the cambalopsid genera Hypocambala and Glyphiulus is debatable. The focus of controversy is whether the presence of crests on the trunk rings is an appropriate key character dividing these two genera. To address this issue, we conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis including species with or without crests belonging to Hypocambala and species with crests belonging to Glyphiulus.

New trimester-specific reference intervals for clinical biochemical tests in Taiwanese pregnant women-cohort of TMICS.

Background: Because there are no published biochemical reference intervals (RI) for pregnant Taiwanese women, we used an established islandwide birth cohort, the Taiwan Maternal and Infant Cohort Study, to establish RIs for important biochemical parameters in women during their 3rd trimester in Taiwan. Additionally, we compared the differences in these biochemical parameters between early third trimester (weeks 28 to 31) and late third trimester (weeks 37 to 40) of pregnant women as well as the differences in them between the third trimester and after delivery.

Methods: Between 2012 and 2015, we recruited a total of 2,136 pregnant women from nine hospitals located in northern (n = 3), central (n = 3), southern (n = 2), and eastern Taiwan (n = 1) to receive regular prenatal health examinations during their third trimester (weeks 28 to 40).
