Introduction: Viral hepatitis, caused by various hepatitis viruses, is a global health threat leading to chronic liver disease, hepatic cirrhosis, hepatic failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Smoking, a known risk factor for numerous chronic diseases, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of viral hepatitis. However, understanding the relationship between smoking and viral hepatitis is complex due to the presence of confounding factors and the potential for reverse associations.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma, one of the most common malignancies, is the worldwide three cause leading the mortality of cancers. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a typical tumor marker for the recurrences of HCC, and can be utilized potentially during routine follow-up after HCC resection. Therefore, sensitive and accuracy detection of AFP is very critical at the early stage of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Objective: Addressing the inhibition and reversal of chronic hepatitis B fibrosis is an urgent global challenge, which highlights the critical need to understand its underlying mechanisms. Inhibiting the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is an important strategy for fibrosis reversal. In particular, the induction of ferroptosis in HSCs presents a promising avenue for curtailing liver fibrosis.

This study aimed to compare the serum lipid profiles between tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) in the long-term treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). We analyzed data from treatment-naïve CHB patients administered with TDF or TAF, collected from electronic medical records between May 2017 and September 2022. Serum lipid indices, including total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and their ratios (TC/HDL, LDL/HDL), were assessed at baseline, and at 48 and 96 weeks.

miR-34a targeting on Smad4 plays important role in TGF-β1 pathway which is a dominant factor for balancing collagen production and degradation in hepatic stellate cells. TGF-β1/Smad4 regulated collagen deposition is a hallmark of hepatic fibrosis. The potential regulation on miR-34a by LncRNAs in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is still reserved to be revealed.

The role of genetic factors in the occurrence and progression of CHB (CHB) is still not fully explored. In recent years, genome-wide association studies on CHB patients have demonstrated that a large number of CHB-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms exist in the gene intron, which may regulate expression at the transcriptional level. Modification of RNA mA methylation is one of the key mechanisms regulating gene expression.

Hepatitis B virus-related liver cirrhosis (HBV-LC) is susceptible to bacterial infections, which could lead to adverse prognosis in patients. MicroRNAs (miRs/miRNAs) are easily detected in peripheral blood and are involved in multiple liver diseases. The present pilot study aimed to investigate differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs in the serum of patients with HBV-LC and bacterial infection, and to identify potential biomarkers.
