Background: Artificial Intelligence (AI) models hold promise as useful tools in healthcare practice. We aimed to develop and assess AI models for automatic classification of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) clinical images through a Deep Learning (DL) approach, and to explore explainability using Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM).
Methods: This study assessed a dataset of 778 clinical images of OPMD and OSCC, divided into training, model optimization, and internal testing subsets with an 8:1:1 proportion.
Understanding the early molecular events driving oral carcinogenesis is vital for diagnosing oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) promptly. While metabolic differences between oral leukoplakia (OLK), OSCC, and healthy oral mucosa have been reported, the metabolic changes distinguishing malignant transformed OLKs (MT-OLK) from non-transformed OLKs (NT-OLK) remain unexplored. Here, we examine the metabolomic profiles of 5 cases of MT-OLK and 15 of NT-OLK to identify key predictive molecules using untargeted high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis is an endemic parasitic disease in several regions, including Brazil. Squamous Cell Carcinoma is the main malignant neoplasm of the head and neck and is strongly linked to chronic sunburn. We present a rare case in which a patient exhibits the manifestation of both diseases in the oral region.

Study Design: Paraffin-embedded tissue blocks from patients microscopically diagnosed with MBBCs were retrieved from 4 oral and maxillofacial pathology archives. Data, including clinical, radiographic, and microscopic characteristics, treatments used, and follow-up status, were collected from the pathology records.

Background: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a rare malignant tumor, frequently affects pediatric patients, with 35%-40% occurring in the head and neck. This study analyzes the clinicopathologic profile of pediatric head and neck rhabdomyosarcomas from Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, and South Africa.
Methods: We reviewed 44 cases from 10 Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology services, conducting immunohistochemical analyses of desmin, myogenin, Myo-D1, and Ki67, with quantification via QuPath software.

This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South).
