Introduction: It is anticipated that the prevalence of illnesses affecting the central nervous system (CNS) will rise significantly due to longer lifespans and changing demography. Age-related decline in brain function and neuronal death are features of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which provide formidable treatment challenges. Because most therapeutic drugs cannot across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to reach the brain, there are still few treatment alternatives available despite a great deal of research.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how prolonged patient and diagnostic intervals affect the likelihood of advanced-stage gastrointestinal (GI) cancers.
  • It was conducted on 1,859 patients and found that longer patient intervals correlate with a higher risk of advanced stages, while longer diagnostic intervals initially lower this risk but then increase it after 26 days.
  • The findings highlight that minimizing both patient and diagnostic delays is crucial in reducing the incidence of advanced-stage GI cancers.

Yellow phosphorus or metal phosphide (YP-MP) rodenticide poisoning has been a known cause of acute liver failure (ALF) in many countries of Asia and North and South America over the last decade. It is a highly toxic compound and is a well-known cause of intentional or accidental poisoning in both adults and children. In lower doses, it causes gastrointestinal symptoms and mild hepatic injury, and patients may spontaneously recover.

Article Synopsis
  • Venoms are a great example of how similar traits can evolve independently in different animal groups, but there's limited research on toxin genes in most species, especially in hymenopteran insects like bees.
  • A study examined the origins of 11 toxin genes across 32 hymenopteran genomes, finding that most venom genes developed from single gene co-option and further diversified through gene duplication.
  • The research revealed that most venom genes are common to all hymenopterans, with only a few like melittin and anthophilin1 being exclusive to bees, suggesting these venom proteins existed before the significant diversification of this insect group.

This is a case of a patient with history of ear surgery who visited ENT outdoor, for continuous vertigo which used to get aggravated with loud noise, associated with hearing loss, persistent sensations of right-sided aural fullness/pressure and otalgia for last 2 years. He had history of tympanoplasty with ossiculoplasty using a TORP. On exploration under local anesthesia there was a displaced prosthesis into inner ear, upon removal of which symptoms and severity subsided exponentially.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed otoscopic abnormalities, hearing status, and radiological changes in the ear opposite to the one affected by chronic otitis media in 300 patients.
  • More than 30% of patients had some abnormality in the contralateral ear, with different rates of abnormalities observed in types of chronic otitis media (Mucosal and Squamosal).
  • Surprisingly, 77% of patients still had normal hearing in the contralateral ear, showing that chronic otitis media can affect both ears, emphasizing the need for thorough evaluations.
