Epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT) is a key event for tumour cells to initiate metastasis leading to switching of E-cadherin to N-cadherin. Transglutaminase-2 (Tgase-2) expression is increased in TGF-β1-induced EMT in A549 lung cancer cells or other lung cancer cells. The role and underlying mechanism of Tgase-2 in N-cadherin switching of TGF-β1-induced EMT are not known.

The purpose of this study was to assess the characteristics and predictors of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis in young adults. The study also evaluated predictors of cardiac events. We retrospectively enrolled 914 self-referred asymptomatic subjects under the age of 45 (552 men, 362 women) who had undergone both coronary CT angiography (CCTA) and coronary artery calcium scoring.

In this study, we investigated the mechanisms by which Gln exerts beneficial effects in airway neutrophilia.

However, the role and signaling mechanism of histamine are still unclear in melanogenesis, especially in relation to growth-differentiation factor-15, which is a protein belonging to transforming growth factor beta and found to be overexpressed in metastatic or malignant melanoma.

Aims: Although albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) and total protein to creatinine ratio (PCR) in random urine have been supposed as alternatives to 24-h urine measurements, there are few studies comparing these tests in CKD patients. Therefore, we investigated the relations between ACR and PCR in CKD patients and the factors that affect the relationship.

Diagnostic accuracy of notified cases as pulmonary tuberculosis in private sectors of Korea.

The diagnostic accuracy of the data reported in the Korean tuberculosis surveillance system (KTBS) has not been adequately investigated. We reviewed the clinical data of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) cases notified from private medical facilities through KTBS between January and June, 2004. PTB cases were classified into definite (culture-proven), probable (based on smear, polymerase chain reaction, histology, bronchoscopic finding, computed tomography, or both chest radiograph and symptoms) or possible (based only on chest radiograph) tuberculosis.

Background: Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) release assays (IGRAs), which can overcome several limitations of the tuberculin skin test in detecting latent TB infection, were introduced recently in routine clinical practice. However, IGRAs are highly dynamic tests, and the T-cell responses tend to fluctuate over time. We wanted to evaluate the conversion and reversion rates of monthly IGRAs over 1 year among health-care workers (HCWs) in contact with patients with TB in South Korea, a country with an intermediate TB burden.

The relationship between blood pressure (BP) response during exercise and future cardiovascular events remains unclear. We assessed the association between an increase in early systolic BP (SBP) during exercise tests and future cardiovascular events in patients with sustained hypertension (sHT). Between 2002 and 2005, we enrolled 300 patients newly diagnosed with mild-to-moderate sHT without complications from the Asan Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring registry.

Influence of diabetes mellitus on long-term (five-year) outcomes of drug-eluting stents and coronary artery bypass grafting for multivessel coronary revascularization.

Diabetes mellitus is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and for diffuse and progressive atherosclerosis. We evaluated the outcomes of drug-eluting stent (DES) placement and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in 891 diabetic patients (489 for DES implantation and 402 for CABG) and 2,151 nondiabetic patients (1,058 for DES implantation and 1,093 for CABG) with multivessel CAD treated from January 2003 through December 2005 and followed up for a median 5.6 years.
