Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between antithyroperoxidase antibodies (TPOAb) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) to better understand how thyroid autoimmunity relates to cardiovascular disease.
  • It analyzed data from 9,264 participants without prior cardiovascular issues, finding that varying levels of TPOAb were significantly associated with increased cIMT at the initial assessment.
  • However, there was no significant connection between TPOAb levels and increased cIMT at the follow-up after eight years, particularly in individuals with normal thyroid function.

The association of thyroid function with essential and non-essential amino acids is understudied, despite their common metabolic roles. Thus, our aim was to evaluate the association of thyroid function with the levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs-leucine, isoleucine, and valine) and of alanine in the general population. We utilized data from the São Paulo research center of ELSA-Brasil, a longitudinal population-based cohort study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the link between thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAbs) and mortality, examining how sociodemographic and lifestyle factors influence TPOAb levels.
  • Younger age, higher body mass index, female sex, and smoking habits were identified as key determinants of detectable and positive TPOAb levels among participants.
  • Higher TPOAb levels were associated with increased cancer-related mortality risk in men and other causes of mortality in women, although the overall low mortality rate in the sample suggests a need for more research into the clinical significance of TPOAbs.

Introduction: The association of diabetes with subclinical thyroid diseases may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. We analyzed the association of subclinical hypothyroidism, diabetes, and both diseases with carotid Intima-Media Thickness (cIMT) as a surrogate maker for early cardiovascular disease in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil).

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis with data from the 3 visit (2017‒2019).

There are conflicting data regarding the association of thyroid function with incident diabetes. We prospectively investigated thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), free triiodothyronine (fT3), and its conversion ratio (fT3:fT4) with the risk of developing diabetes in euthyroid subjects and those with subclinical thyroid dysfunction. Our hypothesis is that this relationship is a U-shaped curve since both subclinical thyroid diseases may be associated with diabetes.

Objective: Although some previous data have suggested a high iodine intake in Brazil, the prevalence of antithyroperoxidase antibodies (TPOAb) in the country is compatible with rates from countries with adequate iodine intake. This observation emphasizes the importance of knowing the incidence of TPOAb in Brazil.

Methods: This prospective analysis included euthyroid participants with negative TPOAb at baseline and a thyroid function assessment at a 4-year follow-up.

Subclinical thyroid disorders have been associated with atherosclerosis and increased cardiovascular risk. As triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles (TRLPs) have recently emerged as a casual factor for atherogenesis, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between subclinical hypo- and hyperthyroidism and TRLP subfractions. We selected 5066 participants from the ELSA-Brasil cohort with available data of thyroid function and lipid profile measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

Purpose Of Review: In this review, we intend to show the heterogenicity of the triglyceride group, including the triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and its subparticles, apolipoproteins, and its role in atherogenesis through epidemiological and genetic studies, observing the association of these various components and subclasses with subclinical atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. Also, we reevaluated the moment of blood collection for the triglyceride measurement and its repercussion in atherosclerosis. Finally, we present the current scenario and new insights about the pharmacologic treatment of hypertriglyceridemia.
