The development of advanced detection systems for charged particles in laser-based accelerators and the need for precise time of flight measurements have led to the creation of detectors using ultra-thin plastic scintillators, indicating their use as transmission detectors with low energy loss and minimal dispersion for protons around a few MeV. This study introduces a new detection system designed by the Institute for Instrumentation in Molecular Imaging for time of flight and timing applications at the National Accelerator Center in Seville. Octahedrally coordinated spin crossover (SCO) Fe complexes represent an important class of switchable molecular materials. This study presents the synthesis and characterisation of a novel complex, [Fe(ppt-2Fph)]·2MeOH, where ppt-2Fph is a new asymmetric ionogenic tridentate planar ligand 2-(5-(2-fluorophenyl)-4-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)-6-(1-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine. The complex exhibits a hysteretic thermally induced SCO transition at 285 K on cooling and at 293 K on heating, as well as light induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) at lower temperatures with a relaxation (LIESST) temperature of 73 K.

We report herein the synthesis and characterization of two unprecedented isomorphous spin-crossover two-dimensional coordination polymers of the Hofmann-type formulated {Fe(Hdpyan)(μ-[M(CN)])}, with M = Pd, Pt and Hdpyan is the partially protonated form of 2,5-(dipyridin-4-yl)aniline (dpyan). The Fe is axially coordinated by the pyridine ring attached to the 2-position of the aniline ring, while it is equatorially surrounded by four [M(CN)] planar groups acting as μ-bidentate ligands defining layers, which stack parallel to each other. The other pyridine group of Hdpyan, being protonated, remains peripheral but involved in a strong [M-C≡N···Hpy] hydrogen bond between alternate layers.

We report herein a series of neutral -thiocyanate mononuclear spin crossover (SCO) complexes, [FeL(NCS)] (-), based on tetradentate ligands L obtained by reaction of N-substituted 1,2,3-triazolecarbaldehyde with 1,3-propanediamine or 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-diaminopropane [L = ,-bis((1,5-dimethyl-1-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methylene)propane-1,3-diamine/-2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine, / and ,-bis((1-ethyl/1-propyl-1-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methylene)-2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine, /]. The thermal-induced SCO behavior is characterized by abrupt transitions with an average critical temperature (Δ)/hysteresis loop width (Δ) in the range 190-252/5-14 K, while the photo-generated metastable high-spin (HS) phases are characterized by temperatures in the range 44-59 K. Single crystal analysis shows that except , all compounds experience reversible symmetry breaking coupled with the thermal SCO.

The one-pot reaction of a chiral aldehyde, -methoxyaniline or -fluoroaniline, and triethylborane produces the corresponding alkylated chiral amine with high yields and diastereoisomeric ratios. Stereocontrol is induced by the presence of a heteroatom in the α-position to the aldehyde. In the case of alkylation of imines derived from chiral aliphatic amines, good yields and moderate to high diastereoselectivity are obtained: yields are significantly better when the preformed imine is used in the reaction with triethyl borane, and diastereoselectivity of the reactions largely depends on the structure of the chiral aliphatic amine.

Little is known about the mechanisms behind the bistability (memory) of molecular spin transition compounds over broad temperature ranges (>100 K). To address this point, we report on a new discrete Fe neutral complex [FeL] () based on a novel asymmetric tridentate ligand 2-(5-(3-methoxy-4-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)-6-(1-pyrazol-1-yl))pyridine (L). A diastereo- and enantioselective organocatalytic aldol reaction between alkylidenepyrazolones and trifluoromethyl ketones leading to chiral tertiary alcohols bearing a trifluoromethyl group is presented. The methodology is based on the use of a bifunctional organocatalyst in order to activate the γ-hydrogen atoms of the alkylidenepyrazolone nucleophile and the carbonyl group of the trifluoromethylarylketone providing highly functionalized trifluoromethyl alcohols with moderate yields, excellent diastereoselectivity, and moderate to good enantioselectivity. Experiments monitoring the conversion by H NMR and the enantiomeric excess by HPLC with the reaction time showed that full conversion of the starting materials is not achieved and that the enantiomeric excess decreases upon extended times, probably due to the reversibility of the reaction.

The diastereo- and enantioselective dearomative formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition of 2-nitrobenzofurans and α-aryl-α-isocyanoacetate esters provides tricyclic compounds bearing the 3,8-dihydro-1-benzofuro[2,3-]pyrrole framework with three consecutive stereogenic centers. The reaction was enabled by a cupreine-ether organocatalyst. The reaction products were obtained with almost full diastereoselectivity and with excellent enantiomeric excesses for a number of substituted 2-nitrobenzofurans and isocyanoacetates.
