Background: Syphilis screening methods in blood banks have recently transitioned from manual nontreponemal tests to automated treponemal-specific enzyme immunoassays and chemiluminescence immunoassays (CIA). Although convenient and highly sensitive, this has led to increased false-positive rates leading to the wastage of blood resources.

Aims And Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the positive predictive value (PPV) of (TP)-CIA as a screening tool in healthy blood donors and determine optimal cutoff values to improve specificity, thereby reducing unnecessary blood wastage and donor exclusion.

Background: Hormonal imbalance, mitochondrial dysfunctions, and oxidative stress (OS) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and its associated clinical features. A sedentary lifestyle, exposure to air pollutants, prenatal exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, processed and nutritionally depleted food, rich in trans fats, salts, and sugars, and high BMI specifically in visceral adiposity induce OS. OS damages the mitochondrial DNA, lipids, and proteins that impair mitochondrial function.

Article Synopsis
  • Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is typically treated with either metformin or insulin, but their effects on children's heart and metabolic health are not well understood.
  • The study aimed to compare the cardiometabolic outcomes in children of mothers treated with these two medications through a systematic review of randomized control trials published between 1974 and 2024.
  • Results showed that children whose mothers used metformin had better body composition and lower fasting glucose and triglyceride levels, but overall, most cardiometabolic outcomes did not differ significantly, indicating a need for further research with longer follow-ups and diverse populations.*

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the presence of myositis-specific and myositis-associated autoantibodies (MSAs/MAAs) in a group of Indian children with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) and how these antibodies relate to clinical features and patient outcomes.
  • A total of 43 children were assessed, with 81.4% testing positive for at least one type of autoantibody; the most common were anti-NXP2, anti-TIF1γ, and anti-MDA-5.
  • While many patients showed positive responses to treatment, the study found no clear link between the specific autoantibody profiles and the successful achievement of complete clinical responses or remission.
