Background: Exposure to plastic additives, such as phthalates and bisphenols, has been associated with a higher risk of allergic conditions, but the evidence is inconsistent for children younger than five.
Objective: To examine the association between pre- and postnatal urinary phthalates and bisphenols, and allergic conditions, and potential effect modification by sex, in pre-school children, through a pooled analysis.
Methods: We pooled data from the Barwon Infant Study (Australia), the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development Study (Canada), the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (United States) and the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes-wide cohorts (United States).

Background: Rapid weight gain (RWG) during infancy, defined as an upward crossing of one centile line on a weight growth chart, is highly predictive of subsequent obesity risk. Identification of infant RWG could facilitate obesity risk assessment from infancy.
Objective: Leveraging machine learning (ML) algorithms, this study aimed to develop and validate risk prediction models to identify infant RWG by the age of 1 year.

Background: Asthma has a significant impact worldwide, but prevention strategies remain limited. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of neonatal BCG vaccination in preventing asthma by modulating early-life immunity.
Methods: The Melbourne Infant Study: BCG for Allergy and Infection Reduction (MIS BAIR) was a phase 3 multicentre randomized controlled trial in Victoria, Australia.
Objectives: To examine the prospective associations between infant sleep patterns and subsequent autism characteristics and diagnosis in a population-derived sample.
Design, Setting And Participants: Population-derived birth cohort study in Victoria, Australia's Barwon region, with 1074 mother-infant pairs recruited from June 2010 to 2013.
Main Outcome Measures: Infant sleep characteristics via the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire at 6 months (n=925) and 12 months (n=885).

Background: Mucosal immune responses and epithelial barrier function are key emerging determinants of susceptibility to wheezing illnesses in early life.
Objective: We sought to investigate the association between nasal transcriptome in healthy infants and the subsequent incidence of recurrent wheeze.
Methods: In a population-derived prebirth cohort study, whole-transcriptome sequencing was performed to compare the nasal transcriptome at 1 month of age from 26 infants who subsequently developed recurrent wheeze (parents' record in symptom diary) in the first year of life with that of 22 infants who remained wheeze-free.
Phthalates are ubiquitous environmental pollutants known for their endocrine-disrupting properties, particularly during critical periods such as pregnancy and early childhood. Phthalates alter lipid metabolism, but the role of prenatal exposure on the offspring lipidome is less understood. In particular, we focused on long chain acylcarnitines - intermediates of fatty acid oxidation that serve as potential biomarkers of mitochondrial function and energy metabolism.

Genetic variation influencing an individual's susceptibility to inflammation may play a role in the effects of phthalate exposure on neurodevelopment however there is no summary measure developed for genetic susceptibility to inflammation.
Methods: We developed a genetic pathway function score for inflammation (gPFS), based on the transcriptional activity of the inflammatory response pathway in the brain and other tissues.

Objectives: In experimental models, the prenatal diet influences gut microbiota composition in mothers and offspring; however, it is unclear whether this occurs in humans. We investigated the effects of a gut-focused perinatal dietary intervention on maternal and infant gut microbiota composition four weeks after birth.
Methods: This randomised controlled trial randomised pregnant women to receive dietary advice as part of standard care, or additionally receive a dietary intervention focused on the Australian Dietary Guidelines and increasing prebiotic and probiotic/fermented food intakes (ACTRN12616000936426).
